The picture above was taken by a dismayed Cronulla resident out on an early morning walk on Tuesday morning.
The vandalism comes amid an apparent backflip by the state government on the idea of compulsory registration plates for e-bikes.
The government previously rejected the Opposition's call for registration plates, but is now consulting on "fleet identification numbers" for shared bikes.
Shadow Transport Minister Natalie Ward said it was an "embarrassing backflip" on e-bike number plates, and warned that after months of talk and tinkering nothing on the ground had changed.
Ms Ward said it was also "a half-measure approach" that would target only shared bikes "while completely ignoring the dropkicks on private e-bikes, who are terrorising parks, footpaths and people across the city".
