Cavaliers Get Major Boost Despite Game 3 Loss to Raptors

Donovan Mitchell and James Harden of the Cleveland Cavaliers talk with a coach during a playoff game against the Toronto Raptors.

The Cleveland Cavaliers took a hit in Game 3 — but the series outlook may have shifted back in their favor.

Cavaliers Fall in Game 3 as Raptors Break Through

Cleveland dropped a 126-104 decision to the Toronto Raptors on Thursday night, cutting its series lead to 2-1.

Toronto delivered its most complete performance of the matchup, powered by 33-point efforts from Scottie Barnes and RJ Barrett. The Raptors pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Cleveland 43-23 behind a barrage of perimeter shooting.

The loss snapped Cleveland’s 12-game playoff winning streak against Toronto, a run that dated back to 2016.

Raptors Lose Immanuel Quickley for Series

Immanuel Quickley ruled out for the remainder of the series after hamstring setback despite Raptors’ Game 3 win.

Despite the Game 3 result, Cleveland received a significant boost off the floor.

Toronto announced that guard Immanuel Quickley will miss the remainder of the first-round series after re-injuring his right hamstring during his rehabilitation process.

Quickley had already been sidelined, but the confirmation removes any possibility of his return — a major blow to Toronto’s rotation.

The 25-year-old averaged 16.4 points, 5.9 assists and 4.0 rebounds during the regular season and served as a key secondary playmaker.

Cavaliers Still Hold Edge Despite Game 3 Loss

While the Raptors proved capable without Quickley in a single-game burst, sustaining that level of execution over the remainder of the series presents a different challenge.

Toronto leaned heavily on shot-making in Game 3, including an 8-for-9 performance from three-point range in the fourth quarter. Jamison Battle accounted for half of that surge, going a perfect 4-for-4 from deep in the final period.

Cleveland, meanwhile, struggled to maintain defensive pressure late.

Cavaliers Point to Physicality, Defensive Detail

The Cavaliers emphasized that execution — not scheme — was the primary issue.

“I just don’t think our force was there,” Donovan Mitchell said. “We weren’t forceful enough. Our force coming off actions was really the issue.”

Evan Mobley added, “We’ve got to meet them early and not let them get into the paint as easily. They switched up some of their offense, and we’ve got to be more active and more detail-oriented.”

Donovan on the Raptors defensive coverages:

“I just don’t think our force. We weren’t forceful enough with it. … Our force of coming off of it was really the issue.”

Perimeter defense will be a key focus moving forward after allowing Toronto to shoot efficiently from beyond the arc in Game 3.

Cleveland Offense Produces, but Efficiency Lags

Offensively, the Cavaliers received balanced scoring but lacked efficiency in critical stretches.

Mitchell, Mobley and Max Strus each scored 15 points, while James Harden led the team with 18.

Harden was forced into a difficult night by Toronto’s defensive pressure, shooting 5-of-13 from the field and 3-of-10 from three-point range.

“They did a heck of a job,” Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson said of Toronto’s defense. “They made him work.”

Cleveland shot just 39.3% from the field and committed 22 turnovers, which Toronto converted into 23 points.

Game 4 Presents Pivotal Opportunity

Even after the loss, Cleveland remains in control of the series — and now regains a key advantage.

With Quickley officially out, the Cavaliers hold an edge in depth and backcourt stability heading into Game 4.

The task is clear: clean up defensive lapses, reassert physicality and avoid another perimeter breakdown.

Game 4 between the Cavaliers and the Raptors is scheduled at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday on ESPN.
