The New York Mets are already looking to strengthen their squad just one month into the 2026 season. New York previously revamped much of its roster ahead of the current campaign. They picked up Luis Robert Jr., Marcus Semien, and Freddy Peralta via trades, while also signing Bo Bichette, Devin Williams, and Jorge Polanco in free agency.

Despite the series of moves, the Mets are currently the worst team in all of baseball. In fact, the club only has 10 wins through their first 31 games of the season and a -35 run differential. New York’s biggest issue at the moment is undoubtedly with its offense. The team has the lowest combined OPS (.631) and slugging (.342) in Major League Baseball. They are averaging the second-fewest runs per game (3.42) as well.

Because of the incredibly disappointing start, ESPN’s Jorge Castillo is reporting that the Mets are actively pursing trades for hitters. It certainly seems as if general manager David Stearns and team owner Steve Cohen are continuing to be aggressive. After all, New York cannot just sit and wait for things to turn around.

According to Castillo, the Mets are willing to offload starting pitching to help facilitate a trade. Nevertheless, the star trio of Nolan McLean, Freddy Peralta, and Clay Holmes is considered untouchable. The team’s stance on McLean is hardly surprising. The budding star is widely considered one of the top young pitchers in baseball. Peralta and Holmes are also top-tier starters as well. However, the duo may not stick around beyond 2026.

Although the New York Mets just acquired Peralta in January, he is set to become a free agent in the fall. Both the club and player would seemingly like to work out a fresh deal, but contract negotiations have stalled. Holmes, on the other hand, has a $12 million player option for the 2027 campaign. While it is a solid salary, he would likely receive significantly more money in free agency.

Despite the precarious situation regarding Peralta and Holmes, the Mets are seemingly unwilling to dangle either pitcher in the trade market. Instead, New York prefers to potentially offload David Peterson, Kodai Senga, or Sean Manaea. Peterson has posted a 6.53 ERA in seven appearances for the Mets in 2026. He is also set to become a free agent in the upcoming offseason.

New York is Playing a Risky Game

The New York Mets would likely love to offload Senga soon. Nevertheless, he recently hit the 15-day injured list with a back problem. Before the setback, the starter recorded a 9.00 ERA in five starts so far this season. Because of these issues, it could be difficult for the Mets to find a trade partner.

Tobias Myers could also become a possible trade candidate for the Mets as well. The versatile pitcher can be deployed as a starter or reliever and has posted a 2.33 ERA in just over 19 innings during the 2026 season.

Keeping both Peralta and Holmes only to potentially lose the duo in the offseason would be devastating for the Mets. For now, it seems as if Stearns and Cohen still believe they can re-sign the pitchers beyond the current campaign. If this changes, however, they could become available in the trade market before the deadline.
