San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama prepares to shoot during an NBA game. The 22-year-old’s refined strength and conditioning — influenced by an unconventional offseason training approach — have fueled his historic postseason performances.

Long before Victor Wembanyama delivered one of the most dominant performances in recent playoff memory, his inner circle was already searching for unconventional ways to push his development.

According to an ESPN feature published on Wednesday ahead of Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals, Wembanyama’s agent, Bouna Ndiaye, reached out last April to Rob Pelinka — president of basketball operations for the Los Angeles Lakers and former longtime agent for Kobe Bryant — to better understand the mindset that defined Bryant’s relentless approach.

The goal was not transactional. It was transformational.

Victor Wembanyama Development Inspired by Kobe Bryant’s Approach

Spanish soccer powerhouse F.C. Barcelona unveiled new jerseys honoring the Los Angeles Lakers' all-time leading scorer Kobe Bryant.

GettyLOS ANGELES, CA – JUNE 17: Kobe Bryant #24 of the Los Angeles Lakers points in the second quarter of Game Seven of the 2010 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics at Staples Center on June 17, 2010 in Los Angeles, California.

Ndiaye arranged a lunch with Pelinka to study how Bryant approached improvement beyond traditional training methods.

“The way they think is different,” Ndiaye told ESPN. “The way they play, the way they stretch themselves. Just their curiosity. How they study and watch things.”

For Wembanyama, the challenge was clear: how to become more physical without sacrificing the flexibility and fluidity that make him unique.

“Basically, he wanted to have a physical transformation so he can run forever,” Ndiaye said. “And then he wanted to be challenged.”

Pelinka shared stories of Bryant’s unconventional pursuits — studying great white sharks to improve defensive instincts, or examining Michelangelo’s work in the Sistine Chapel to understand vision and perseverance.

For Wembanyama’s camp, those examples reinforced a broader idea: elite development requires creative thinking.

Shaolin-Inspired Training Shapes Wembanyama’s Conditioning

That philosophy helped inform Wembanyama’s offseason regimen, which included a unique training program in China inspired by Shaolin monk principles — emphasizing endurance, flexibility and body control over bulk.

Rather than adding significant weight, Wembanyama focused on sustaining energy, improving balance and strengthening his frame in ways that would allow him to withstand physical play without losing mobility.

The results have become increasingly evident.

Spurs Big Man Delivers Historic Performance in Career-High Minutes

Victor Wembanyama dunks over Thunder defenders during Game 1

GettySan Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama finishes a dunk over Oklahoma City Thunder defenders during his historic 40-point, 20-rebound Game 1 performance.

In Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, Wembanyama showcased the impact of that approach.

The 22-year-old finished with 41 points, 24 rebounds, three assists and three blocks, logging more than 48 minutes in a double-overtime victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder — the most demanding game of his young NBA career.

According to ESPN Insights, Wembanyama became the first player to record at least 35 points and 20 rebounds in a conference finals game since Charles Barkley in 1993.

More telling than the stat line was how he sustained it.

Despite the extended minutes and physical demands, Wembanyama showed little sign of fatigue, continuing to control the paint on both ends deep into overtime.

Wembanyama’s Growth Reflects Long-Term Vision

For Ndiaye, the connection between Wembanyama’s preparation and his performance is not coincidental.

“I wanted to understand how Kobe did things,” Ndiaye said. “Victor is not like anybody else. We have to be creative to build programs that are unique to him.”

That philosophy — blending physical, mental and unconventional training — mirrors the mindset Pelinka described in Bryant.

And for Wembanyama, it may offer a glimpse of what’s ahead.

If Game 1 was any indication, the foundation built through that approach is already translating — not just into production, but into endurance, adaptability and control at the highest level of the postseason.
