NASCAR driver Kyle Busch entered the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season expecting Richard Childress Racing to compete near the front every week. Instead, Busch and the No. 8 team opened the year with disappointing results, poor finishes, and growing pressure inside the organization.

Through the first 10 races of the NASCAR Cup Series season, Busch sat 27th in the standings and failed to record a top-10 finish until Talladega. The struggles pushed Richard Childress Racing to make a major leadership change in late April by replacing crew chief Jim Pohlman with longtime RCR veteran Andy Street.

Since that move, Kyle Busch has started to show improvement on the track. Busch now says the biggest difference comes from how Street understands and applies feedback to the race car during NASCAR weekends.

Kyle Busch Says Andy Street Changed Richard Childress Racing’s Communication

Kyle Busch explained that he has not changed the way he communicates with the No. 8 team despite the recent improvement in NASCAR Cup Series performance. Busch said Andy Street simply processes information differently and turns that feedback into better adjustments for the Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet.

“It’s Street. I don’t know what he’s doing differently. I don’t feel like I’m talking to anybody any differently; I don’t feel like I’m relaying the information any differently. I just feel like it’s maybe construed or thought about in a different way, and then the execution of being able to listen to my words and be able to put it in the racecar translates differently.”

Richard Childress Racing made the crew chief switch after a difficult start to the NASCAR season. Pohlman joined the Cup program after successful years in the Xfinity Series, but the early results with Kyle Busch did not improve.

Busch also entered the season carrying a winless streak of more than 100 NASCAR Cup Series races dating back to 2023. The veteran driver remained outside the playoff cut line as frustration continued to build around the No. 8 team.

Richard Childress Racing Finally Sees Progress With Kyle Busch

Andy Street already had experience working with Kyle Busch before taking over the No. 8 team full-time. The longtime Richard Childress Racing employee worked with Busch during the final races of the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season and helped produce a fifth-place finish at Phoenix Raceway.

Since returning to the pit box, Street has helped the No. 8 team become more competitive. Kyle Busch showed improved speed at Texas Motor Speedway before finishing eighth at Watkins Glen International, his best result of the NASCAR Cup Series season.

That finish came even after Busch ran out of fuel on the final lap while trying to stretch fuel mileage to the end of the race.

Street also contributes significant experience to Richard Childress Racing. Before joining Busch’s team, he served as Performance Director and helped Austin Hill collect 10 Xfinity Series victories.

Richard Childress Racing stated that the previous working relationship between Kyle Busch and Street could help the No. 8 team improve faster during the second half of the NASCAR Cup Series season.

Kyle Busch Compares New RCR Partnership to Championship Years

Kyle Busch compared his growing partnership with Andy Street to the successful years he spent with former Joe Gibbs Racing crew chief Adam Stevens. During that stretch, Busch became one of the top drivers in NASCAR and consistently fought for wins and championships.

“It’s no different than when I had Adam Stevens for five years. We made the playoffs five years in a row, and we were unstoppable. We won 35 races in those years or something like that. It was crazy. And it’s just easy.”

Busch also cited the successful partnership between Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus as another example of how important driver-crew chief chemistry can be in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Heading into the All-Star Race weekend at Dover Motor Speedway, Kyle Busch sits 24th in NASCAR Cup Series points. Although Richard Childress Racing’s veteran still encounters a tough playoff challenge, recent progress has boosted the No. 8 team’s momentum following a disappointing beginning to the NASCAR season.
