Jayson Tatum reacts during Celtics game ahead of key Pelicans matchup with playoff seeding implications.

The Boston Celtics are facing a potentially pivotal injury concern ahead of a winner-take-all Game 7 after Jayson Tatum exited Thursday night’s Game 6 loss with what is believed to be a left calf injury.

Tatum, who scored 17 points before leaving in the third quarter, did not return as the Philadelphia 76ers pulled away for a 106-93 win to even the first-round playoff series.

Jayson Tatum Injury Timeline Hinges on MRI Results

According to sports physical therapist Dr. Evan Jeffries, the primary concern is a potential calf strain — an injury that can vary significantly in severity and recovery timeline. Jeffries noted that an MRI will ultimately determine the extent of the damage and how much time Tatum could miss.

The range of outcomes presents a wide spectrum for Boston:

* Calf tightness: Day-to-day
* Grade I strain: 1–2 weeks
* Grade II strain: 3–6 weeks

With Game 7 looming Saturday in Boston, even the most optimistic scenario leaves Tatum’s availability in question.

Calf Injury Raises Achilles Risk Concerns

Jeffries also highlighted a critical secondary concern: the link between calf injuries and Achilles tendon risk. A weakened calf muscle can increase strain on the Achilles, raising the possibility of a more serious injury if a player returns prematurely.

For a franchise with championship aspirations, the Celtics may have to balance urgency with long-term caution.

76ers Force Game 7 Behind Maxey, George

While Tatum’s injury dominated postgame discussion, Philadelphia delivered its most complete performance of the series to stay alive.

Tyrese Maxey led the way with 30 points, while Paul George added 23 in a vintage performance. Joel Embiid, playing through recovery from an appendectomy, contributed 19 points.

The Sixers, who had been blown out twice earlier in the series, responded with back-to-back wins to force a decisive Game 7.

Philadelphia seized control in the third quarter, highlighted by a momentum-shifting sequence when Kelly Oubre Jr. blocked Jaylen Brown, sparking a fast break that ended in a thunderous dunk.

The Celtics never led in Game 6 and went more than four minutes without scoring late in the third, allowing the Sixers to build an 82-63 advantage entering the final period.

Celtics Face Uncertainty Heading Into Game 7

Tatum’s status now looms as the defining storyline ahead of Saturday’s elimination game. Boston has leaned heavily on its All-NBA forward throughout the series, and his potential absence — or limited effectiveness — could dramatically shift the matchup.

Brown finished with 18 points but was hampered by foul trouble, further underscoring the pressure on Boston’s supporting cast if Tatum is sidelined.

The Celtics will likely await imaging results before making any determination, but with the season on the line, the decision could come down to tolerance for risk versus the urgency of advancing.

Game 7 tips off Saturday in Boston, with a trip to the second round hanging in the balance — and Tatum’s health now at the center of it all.
