Cleveland Browns passer Shedeur Sanders will welcome a new member of the quarterback room in Taylen Green.

The Cleveland Browns have added another layer to their quarterback competition with the selection of Taylen Green, and the rookie is already embracing the opportunity that comes with it.

Green, taken in the sixth round at No. 182 overall, joins a crowded room that includes Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson, and Dillon Gabriel.

Despite not having a prior relationship with Sanders, Green is eager to build one and learn from the group as a whole.

“I mean, I know of him. I don’t have a personal relationship with him. He played high school in Texas, so we went to similar camps — that’s how I know of him,” Green said. “But what he did at Colorado and last year was really good. I’m just excited to work with him and pick things up from him and everybody in the quarterback room. Those guys have had success, not just in college, but in the NFL as well.”

Browns general manager Andrew Berry does not see the selection of Green immediately impacting the quarterback group.

“We do believe in keeping three on the active roster and ideally a fourth on the practice squad. It’s an important position,” Berry said. “There is attrition throughout the year. And I think the other element is that it’s never a problem to have too many good players.”

Browns See ‘Elite’ Traits in Taylen Green

Green is a raw quarterback prospect with elite athletic ability. He posted a 43.5-inch vertical and an 11-foot-2 broad jump at the NFL Combine, setting quarterback records at the event, and ran a 4.36 40-yard dash.

Green is far from a polished prospect but the Browns think they’ll find a way to take advantage of his skill set.

“I just think at that point in the draft, you’re looking for players that have traits, elite traits, which he has. Something you think you can work with and give yourself a chance to develop,” Monken said. “We’re just looking forward to get to work with him.”

Green compiled 9,662 passing yards, 59 touchdowns and 35 interceptions across 53 games at Boise State and Arkansas. He also rushed for 2,405 yards and 35 more scores. The turnovers are the acknowledged sticking point. He committed 37 over his final two college seasons.

“Yeah, just really clean up my footwork. That’s where it starts. It all starts with your feet and your eyes tie with it. So just being on the same timing with my feet to my eyes, being on the same timing with my footwork and my eyes,” Green said. “And like I said, like, everybody knows the turnovers just has to get down a little bit.”

Taylen Green Doesn’t Shift Browns QB Competition

On paper, Green enters well outside the starting conversation. The Browns’ quarterback battle is widely viewed as a two-man race between Sanders and Watson. Barring a dramatic turn of events, Green will be a developmental player in year one. That said, Monken left the door open on creative usage.

“Having an athletic quarterback can be critical to having success. So, if he’s able to do that, then we’ll certainly put him in a position if we think that can help us win a game. It certainly adds some value with his ability to throw it, compared when you get in those situations as opposed to having to go Wildcat,” Monken said. “It’s not that Q (Quinshon Judkins) can’t throw it, but I would doubt he can throw it as well, as the young man we just took.”

Monken has said he wants to set a depth chart sooner rather than later. Green is a long shot to factor into that conversation this season. But in Cleveland, quarterback rooms have a way of reshuffling quickly.
