Phillies' general manager Dave Dombrowski isn't panicking over the team's early season struggles

The Philadelphia Phillies entered the 2026 campaign with heightened expectations, but to this point, they have been one of the most disappointing teams in the entire league. The Phillies currently find themselves in the middle of a seven-game losing streak, which has seen their record on the season fall to 8-15.

If it weren’t for the fact that the New York Mets have been the worst team in the majors, Philadelphia’s struggles would likely be generating more attention among fans. You can bet the team has taken note of its recent woes, but it doesn’t sound like general manager Dave Dombrowski is ready to hit the panic button just yet.

Dave Dombrowski Addresses Phillies’ Recent Losing Streak

For the past few years, the Philles have been one of the top teams in the majors, but they haven’t been able to get over the hump and win a championship. With their core group of star players getting older, Philadelphia’s front office operated with a sense of urgency over the offseason, with the hope being that they could reemerge as the top team in the loaded National League East division.

Instead, the team has fallen flat on its face to this point, with its woes hitting a new low with each passing loss. Philadelphia isn’t getting consistent contributions from its lineup, and its pitching staff hasn’t been able to pick up the slack. Put it all together, and you have a team that has failed to come close to meeting expectations this year.

The good news for the Phillies is that the season is still young, but they need to get their act together quickly in order to ensure they don’t fall out of contention in their division. Dombrowski knows that the product from his team has not been good enough, but he preached patience when discussing his squad, as he believes they have enough talent to eventually right the ship.

“The one thing you can’t do is give in,” Dombrowski said, per Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia. “You have to keep working hard, fighting and battling. And if we do — and I think we will — we will come out of this. I can’t give you a date when or where, but this team is too talented not to.”

Phillies Looking to Get Back on Track vs. the Cubs

Teams go through ups and downs throughout the course of a 162-game MLB season, but when you struggle out of the gate, things get amplified. That’s certainly been the case for Philly, and while it’s not time to sound the alarms just yet, it’s clear that this squad needs to get back in the win column sooner rather than later.

Philadelphia may have lost the first two games of its ongoing series against the Chicago Cubs, but there is still time for the team to salvage a series split in this four-game set. It will need to win on Wednesday night in order to ensure that’s possible, though, or else an already bad situation will be at risk of becoming much worse in the blink of an eye.
