Cubs manager Craig Counsell

Despite perhaps being hit the hardest with injuries to their starting rotation this season, the Chicago Cubs have been one of the best teams in the National League through the first month+ of the season.

The most recent injury news was that of starter Matthew Boyd, who tore his meniscus and will be out for the foreseeable future. While the reports have been a bit unclear, it sounds like Boyd could miss the remainder of the season, which should force the Cubs to make an impactful trade to replace his services.

Matthew Boyd is heading to the injured list with a left bicep strain. Here's what it means for the Chicago Cubs' rotation.

Chicago Cubs Must Consider Trading for Royals’ Starter Kris Bubic

Look, if the Chicago Cubs want to achieve their ultimate goals this season, they will need to address the starting pitching, and at this point, the only feasible way to do that is by making a meaningful trade.

The Cubs must consider trading for Kansas City Royals starter Kris Bubic.

Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller recently indicated that Bubic is the most likely Royals player to be dealt this summer:

“It’s tough to say which direction the Royals will go. They’re three games below .500 with a minus-13 run differential, but they are right there in an American League that has been a hot mess. If they end up selling, though, Bubic is going to be quite the coveted name on the trade block. He has a 2.74 ERA in nearly 200 innings pitched since the beginning of 2024, and his salary is low enough that any team with designs of making the postseason could afford him for a couple of months.”

Kris Bubic is a free agent after this season and is on a one-year, $6.15 million contract. He was named to the All-Star team last season, and continues to emerge as a top lefty starter in MLB.

More on Kris Bubic…

GettyKris Bubic posted a career-best 2.55 ERA in 2025 with the Royals. He is now emerging as a top southpaw trade candidate in Major League Baseball.

Kris Bubic has spent his entire seven-year MLB career with the Kansas City Royals.

He’s made 87 total starts and has bounced back and forth between the bullpen and rotation before, now being a mainstay in the Royals’ starting staff.

This season, Bubic has made seven starts and holds a 3.32 ERA over 40+ innings. If the Royals, who are hovering around .500, decide to be sellers come July, they will receive many calls about Bubic.

Over 512.1 career innings, Bubic holds an ERA of 4.08 with 486 strikeouts. He’s a player that the Chicago Cubs must target via trade.
