Keylan Rutledge of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets speaks to the media during the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine.

The Houston Texans added a mauler who is all about business in Keylan Rutledge. He should fit right in alongside last year’s top pick, Aireontae Ersery, based on comments from the 26th overall pick of the 2026 draft.

That is encouraging for the Texans, who have undergone significant overhauls along their offensive line in back-to-back offseasons.

Moreover, Rutledge can help in multiple ways until he is ready to start.

Texans’ Keylan Rutledge Pick Sparks Strong Takes

GettyKeylan Rutledge of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets is the newest member of the Houston Texans with the 26th overall pick of the 2026 NFL Draft after a trade with the Buffalo Bills.

The Texans did not mince words about Rutledge, whom they decided to trade up two spots with the Buffalo Bills to select.

“WE GOT OUR GUY!” the Texans posted on X immediately after making the pick.

Rutledge said he was “excited” to get to work in a video shared on X by the team after the pick. He also described himself as a “competitor” who is prepared and willing to do “whatever the team needs me to do.”

Rutledge also said he aims to be “tough” and “relentless.”

The Texans doubled down on their message in a follow-up video. It included head coach DeMeco Ryans’ reaction in the draft room.

The Texans shared visuals of Rutledge getting announced by commissioner Roger Goodell. They also shared clips of Rutledge receiving the good news. He spent the time at home with his wife, other family members, a small group of friends, and some chicken wings.

They believe Rutledge fits in with their “SWARM mentality,” and they are not alone in that assessment.

“The Texans move up to snag an interior lineman to help establish the run,” former NFL player and scout Bucky Brooks wrote for NFL.com on April 23. “Rutledge mauls defenders at the point of attack and perfectly fits the rough-and-tough mold DeMeco Ryans wants in front of his franchise quarterback.”

Texans Questioned Over Draft Trade & Keylan Rutledge Pick

The Athletic’s Nick Baumgardner gave the Texans a “B-” for Rutledge for a couple of significant reasons. Baumgardner called it an “interesting” decision to take a “pretty high-floor” prospect with experience at center as well as guard.

“At 6-4, 318 pounds with good length and quick feet, Rutledge is a good athlete who plays with a nasty streak in the run game. Elite leader. Elite toughness,” Baumgardner wrote on April 23.

“This might be a bit of a stretch based on medicals, as Rutledge has had some foot trouble in the past – he nearly lost a toe after a car accident in 2023 and wound up playing through the pain anyway. Houston needs interior OL help badly and Rutledge could be a Year 1 starter. Trading up for him? We’ll see how this works out.”

ESPN’s Seth Walder gave the Texans a “C,” noting the Texans’ other offseason moves.

“The Texans couldn’t wait two more picks to continue their ever-churning offensive line rebuild. Georgia tech guard Keylan Rutledge will join an offensive line that has Wyatt Teller and Ed Ingram at guard but certainly could use another potential starter in the interior,” Walder wrote on April 24. “Relative to other first-round trades, the overpay was relatively mild. But still, the package Houston sent Buffalo was worth more than the Texans got in return. The Bills picked up the equivalent of a late-fourth or early-fifth-round pick of surplus value.

“Also, this was likely a trade up just to reach. Entering Thursday, ESPN’s Draft Day Predictor gave Rutledge just a 2% chance of being selected in the first round. Mel Kiper Jr. did have Rutledge at No. 36 in his two-round mock draft a few days ago — but still, that’s 10 picks later!”

From this point on, though, Rutledge’s draft position and the trade the Texans made no longer matter. All that matters is if the Texans made the right decision.
