Denny Hamlin has sparked a strong NASCAR debate after questioning the progress of Corey Day early in his transition to asphalt racing. The discussion, centered on the Corey Day experiment, comes as the young driver continues his first full run in NASCAR competition.

Corey Day’s NASCAR performances have shown flashes of speed, but recent races have also featured repeated incidents. Competing in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, Day has drawn attention from drivers and teams. Hamlin’s comments now bring focus to results, consistency, and how long teams should wait for improvement in a competitive NASCAR environment.

NASCAR: Denny Hamlin Questions Corey Day’s NASCAR Performances

Denny Hamlin’s comments on Corey Day’s NASCAR results have added weight to ongoing discussions about the young driver’s performance. Speaking on his podcast, Hamlin pointed to a pattern he believes is becoming clear in NASCAR races.

“How long does the experiment continue? I mean, you’ve seen good runs out of him. I haven’t seen a lot of great runs out of him. You’ve seen more mistakes than you’ve seen great runs.”

Corey Day’s NASCAR outings in recent weeks have included multiple incidents. At Circuit of the Americas, Day made contact with Connor Zilisch while racing near the front. The contact ended Zilisch’s race, and he later described Day as an “absolute hack.”

At Atlanta, another moment followed. Day spun Ryan Sieg into the wall on Lap 5. These NASCAR rookie mistakes have become part of the conversation around his early development.

Hamlin compared the situation to Carson Hocevar but noted a stylistic difference.

“It’s very different than Carson Hocevar, right? It feels different in the sense that Carson’s just really, really aggressive and makes contact, whereas Day just makes contact. There’s a difference.”

Corey Day NASCAR Transition and Learning Curve

Corey Day’s NASCAR transition remains a key part of the discussion. Denny Hamlin’s comments also addressed the challenge of moving from dirt racing into NASCAR competition.

“You also have to put this in perspective. He is really, really young. Has not got a lick of asphalt experience.”

Corey Day built his reputation on dirt tracks. The move to NASCAR brings new demands, including tire management, braking points, and race pace over long runs. These factors have shaped Corey Day’s NASCAR performance in his first season.

Hamlin said it is difficult to judge where Day stands right now.

“So is he doing what he should be doing? Or is he running as well as to be expected in this moment? Or is he underperforming? I don’t know the answer to that.”

He also raised questions about long-term expectations.

“There are people, a lot of people who would vouch for, ‘Aww, he’s great.’ But is he going to be great on dirt? Or are you saying he’s just a great all-around driver that’s going to be a star in NASCAR? I don’t know.”

Expectations Rise for Corey Day’s NASCAR Results

NASCAR expectations for Corey Day’s NASCAR results are now clear as the season continues. Denny Hamlin’s comments set a timeline for improvement.

“But I think by the end of the year, you’re going to have to see something. There’s going to have to be fewer mistakes and more running up front, especially in that car.”

He pointed to the performance level expected of NASCAR equipment.

“We know that a car with any experienced, good driver in it is going to be running up front, winning races.”

Corey Day’s NASCAR journey began with strong backing, including support from Kyle Larson. His season so far has included competitive moments and incidents. As NASCAR races continue, attention will remain on whether Corey Day’s NASCAR performances improve and match the expectations set within the series.
