Brandon Nimmo not surprised by Mets start.

Former New York Mets slugger Brandon Nimmo isn’t surprised the team is off to a slow start.

New York traded Nimmo to the Texas Rangers in a one-for-one swap for Marcus Semien in an intriguing move. The hope was that Semien would bolster the Mets’ infield and add some more power to the lineup, yet overall, New York’s offense has struggled.

The Mets are 9-19 and tied for last in the NL East, and Nimmo admits the bad start isn’t too surprising to him.

“I was part of that team that started off (0-5 in 2024), and then from May 15 on was the best team in baseball. So I’ve been on both sides of it,” Nimmo said to The New York Post. “I wouldn’t say I’m surprised. Baseball, it takes a long time to have a good or bad season. So there’s still plenty of time for them to right the ship. And there’s still plenty of time for teams that are hot to go bad.”

It’s a bold take from Nimmo as he isn’t shocked his former team is off to a slow start. But, as he said, he still believes the Mets can turn their season around and go on a run, as the talent is there.

As for Nimmo, he’s hitting .280 with 4 home runs and 12 RBIs as he’s been a key part of the Rangers’ offense.

Mets Focused on Turning Season Around

New York is off to a slow start, and there have been talks of manager Carlos Mendoza being fired.

However, Mendoza said his goal is to turn the season around, and he has confidence the team can go on a hot streak.

“The only thing I’m worried about here is I’ve got to get the guys going,” Mendoza said Sunday after his Mets were swept in a doubleheader by the Rockies. “I get it, I get it. I mean, it sucks. And I know the questions will continue to come up. But my job is to find a way to get those guys out of the funk. That’s the bottom line.”

Mets superstar Juan Soto, meanwhile, said the blame goes to the players, not on Mendoza or the team David Stearns has built.

“We’re more worried about our job,” Soto said. “As players, we have to perform. Definitely, this is not Mendy’s fault or David’s fault. They definitely put a great team together, and we have to be the ones that go out there and perform at the end of the day. I don’t think he’s been doing anything wrong. I think he’s been doing a great job as a manager. He’s been moving the pieces and putting the pieces in the right spot. We haven’t come through. It’s not his fault at all.”

The Mets will begin a three-game homestand against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday.

New York GM Admits Trading Nimmo Was Hard

Nimmo was a fan favorite with Mets fans, so trading him away this offseason wasn’t easy.

Yet, Stearns felt like the trade with the Rangers would help New York. So, it’s a move he felt was needed.

“It was something we had to think about, no question,” Stearns said of Nimmo’s popularity with the fan base. “That certainly makes decisions like this a little bit more challenging than they otherwise would be. But at the end of the day, I still felt like this was the right decision for the organization.”

Nimmo was with the Mets from 2016 until 2025.
