On May 3, the San Francisco Giants called up their top prospect, Bryce Eldridge. But the power-hitting first baseman/ designated hitter has not seen his name in the lineup in back-to-back games.
After hitting his first career MLB home run in Saturday’s 13-3 blowout loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, Eldridge did not start in Sunday’s match. He was utilized off the bench and recorded a walk in two plate appearances in a 7-6 extra-inning win.
But now, the 20-year-old is again not listed in the starting lineup.

Eldridge is the top prospect in the Giants’ farm system and the 16th-best overall prospect in the MLB. San Francisco called up the 6-foot-7-inch slugger from Triple-A Sacramento earlier in the month to help spark an offense that ranks last in runs scored.
The former first-round pick has only played in 5 games so far. He has tallied 2 hits in 14 at-bats, including a home run.
But there is a logjam in the infield and designated hitter positions. Eldridge was brought up through the Giants’ farm system as a first baseman. But San Francisco’s highest-paid player, Rafael Devers, takes the majority of starts at that position. Meanwhile, Casey Schmitt has mainly occupied the designated hitter spot. Schmitt is one of the best hitters for a struggling Giants offense right now and leads the team with 6 home runs.

A lot of Giants fans are wondering why the team’s top prospect is not starting. They took to “X” to share their frustrations.
@gggiants: “Are my eyes melting in this heat or is Eldridge not playing again.”
@BayAreaTrev: “What was the point of calling up Eldridge?”
@DylanIsADragon: “Send Eldridge back down if he’s just going to ride the bench. This makes no sense.”
@GiantHotTakes: “Top prospect Bryce Eldridge sits for a SECOND consecutive day after hitting his first big league home run for a team that is 8 games below .500. You cannot emphasize the level of stupidity involved with this decision making. Go win a game.”
After winning a three-game home series against the Pirates, the Giants are currently fourth in the NL West and hold a 16-24 record. They are 8 games back of the division lead and 7 games back of the last wild card spot.
The Giants’ offense ranks among the MLB’s worst. They have the least amount of home runs and runs scored, which does not explain why their young slugger is not starting.
