ESPN's Field Yates argued Washington Commanders rookie wide receiver Antonio Williams will make an immediate impact.

The Washington Commanders needed to get receiver help for quarterback Jayden Daniels in the 2026 NFL Draft. Preferably, the Commanders needed a receiver who had the potential to contribute immediately. That’s exactly what Washington appears to have landed in third-round wideout Antonio Williams.

Analysts have hyped Williams for his pro-readiness. On Monday, ESPN’s Field Yates included Williams on a list of Day 2-3 draft picks who should make an instant impact.

“Draft position and fit are why Williams cracks this list. He is an extremely experienced, savvy, pro-ready wideout who can start in the slot from Day 1,” wrote Yates. “The Commanders needed receiver help alongside Terry McLaurin, and Williams will compete with players such as Dyami Brown and Luke McCaffrey for snaps.

“I love Williams’ instincts, as he was a persistent chain-mover at Clemson.”

In four seasons at Clemson, Williams posted 208 receptions, 2,336 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns. His best statistical season came during 2024 when he had 75 catches for 904 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns.

Last season, he had 55 catches, 604 receiving yards and four scores.

The Commanders selected Williams at No. 71 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Commanders WR Antonio Williams Makes Rookie Breakout List

Yates didn’t refer to players on his rookie instant impact list as breakout candidates. But that’s essentially what he suggested they are.

The ESPN analyst summarized why Williams is a candidate to contribute immediately perfectly. He’s “pro-ready” and the Commanders have a significant receiver need.

That’s how Washington viewed the wideout during the 2026 NFL Draft.

“I think he’s really advanced for a college player,” said Commanders general manager Adam Peters after drafting Williams. “And those are the things you usually learn at the NFL level and just those nuances as you grow as a player, as you learn new things and everything like that.”

NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein raved about the third-round receiver’s catching ability and athleticism with the ball in his hands.

“There is freestyling inside his routes that create uncertainty for corners but teams might drill down on attention to detail and better efficiency to keep him on schedule,” wrote Zierlein. “He’s not a field-stretcher but he plays fast from snap to whistle and has the ball skills to bring in challenging catches.

“He’s more slippery than explosive with outstanding run-after-catch ability.

“Williams projects as a productive slot receiver with legitimate run/pass/catch talent that should appeal to creative play-callers.”

What Role Could Williams Play as Rookie

In NFL free agency, the Commanders signed receivers Van Jefferson and Dynami Brown. But those wideouts won’t really replace Washington’s 2025 leading receiver Deebo Samuel.

It would be a lot to ask Williams to be Samuel as a rookie. But the receiver is likely to get opportunities to help fill the void at receiver.

The third-round pick could start immediately in the slot while Terry McLaurin and Luke McCaffrey man the outside receiver responsibilities.

The Commanders are also bringing back Treylon Burks, Jaylin Lane, Jacoby Jones and Ja’Corey Brooks at receiver. Nick Nash was also a new receiver free agency addition along with undrafted rookie Chris Hilton Jr.

Pundits have continued to link the Commanders to receivers still available in free agency. If Washington has any doubts about Williams as a Day 1 contributor, adding a veteran receiver would make a lot of sense.

But the team, and a lot of analysts, seem confident Williams will play a significant role this fall.
