New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza reacted after his team was blown out by the Washington Nationals on Wednesday, losing 14-2.

The Mets are now the worst team in baseball with a horrible 10-20 record after the divisional-rival Nationals put a pounding on them in a 14-2 blowout game. The pitching side of things was rough to watch, as Mets starter David Peterson was simply awful, giving up 7 ER in just 3.2 IP before making way for Sean Manaea out of the bullpen, who was just as bad, giving up 6 ER in 2.2 IP. Carl Edwards Jr. finished the game with 2.2 IP, giving up 1 ER, as the veteran with a 1.50 ERA has been one of the few bright spots on the team’s pitching staff this season.

Offensively, the team also struggled, as they were able to muster up only 2 runs despite collecting 10 hits along the way. It was just another bad game by the Mets in a season that’s been full of them, as New York looks like it is going to miss the playoffs despite having the second-highest payroll in baseball.

Carlos Mendoza Gets Real on the Mets

After the game, reporters asked Mendoza about the blowout loss to Washington, and the Mets’ embattled manager did not mince words.

“We have to be better. There’s no excuses, obviously. There’s been a long period of time here where we’re not playing well, so we have to fix it,” Mendoza said.

Carlos Mendoza Could be the Next MLB Manager Fired

In the past week, there have been two MLB managers fired, as the Boston Red Sox fired Alex Cora and the Philadelphia Phillies fired Rob Thomson. Both of those managers were let go because their teams were underperforming, so there is no question that Mendoza is on the hot seat, too. Anytime your team has the worst record in baseball, you are at risk of being fired, and that fact is definitely not lost on Mendoza, who is a baseball lifer who has been around the game forever.

This is not all on Mendoza, however. While a manager being fired is often the low-hanging fruit for a team when they struggle, ultimately, this season from hell by the Mets is because the players are not performing up to their standards. The Mets spent millions of dollars during the offseason to improve their roster, but it appears to be money wasted as this team can’t do anything right.

The Mets conclude their series against the Nationals on Thursday afternoon in New York. If they lose this game and the series, there is a real possibility that Mets president David Stearns fires Mendoza. Although the manager cannot be blamed for all of the team’s struggles, he will likely be the one who takes the fall for the team having such a horrific start to the season. Stearns, too, has to be on the hot seat as he’s the one who put this bad team together, but he will likely let Mendoza take the fall before Mets owner Steve Cohen starts pointing fingers at Stearns himself.
