Chase Claypool #11 of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

It has been nearly four years since he played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Chase Claypool has struggled to continue his NFL career since. After being traded to the Chicago Bears during the 2022 season, the former Notre Dame star would go on to bounce between the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills in 2023 and 2024.

After essentially taking both the 2024 and 2025 seasons off, Claypool is attempting to return to the NFL. The 27-year-old was most recently seen working out for the Green Bay Packers this past weekend. However, he was not offered a contract by the team. It remains to be seen where he will end up next.

Chase Claypool Played Well in His Role with the Pittsburgh Steelers

Chase Claypool

GettyChase Claypool was the 49th overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.

While Claypool might be finding life in the NFL difficult now, it hasn’t always been this way for him. After Pittsburgh drafted him over a half-decade ago, he would go on to have some nice moments in the beginning of his career as a role player in former head coach Mike Tomlin‘s offense. In both 2020 and 2021, he was targeted over 100 times and recorded over 800 yards receiving in each of those years. However, his antics made him expendable.

Since being traded by Pittsburgh in the middle of the 2022 season, he has recorded just 22 catches for 217 receiving yards and one touchdown. At his best, he has been a quality role player with unique big-play ability. But with the way things ended in Pittsburgh, he simply hasn’t been able to regain his NFL footing.

How the Steelers Have Found Answers at WR Since Trading Claypool

DK Metcalf

GettyThe Steelers traded for Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf last offseason.

While it has been bumpy in recent years, Steelers GM Omar Khan may finally be starting to find some consistency in the wide receiver room. In the years since moving on from notable wide receivers such as Antonio Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Claypool, Pittsburgh may have built one of the better wide receiver rooms in the league.

Even though it came at the cost of trading All-Pro wide receiver George Pickens last offseason, Pittsburgh has brought in star pass-catchers DK Metcalf and two-time 1,000-yard receiver Michael Pittman Jr. In this year’s NFL Draft, Khan also made the move to select Alabama wide receiver Germie Bernard in the second round. New head coach Mike McCarthy will now have a lot to work with in 2026, especially if future first-ballot Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers returns for at least one more year.

In his age-42 season, while battling a fractured wrist, Rodgers wasn’t necessarily his 2011 MVP self. But he was still very valuable. Despite working with a makeshift pass-catching group, which only included one wide receiver who was able to eclipse 500 yards receiving (Metcalf), the four-time MVP was really solid in a lot of situations. After recording 25 total touchdowns and just seven interceptions in the regular season, the Super Bowl champion guided the team to its first AFC North crown in five years.
