The San Francisco 49ers could be on the cusp of losing one of their top executives in the building to a new team. According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, 49ers assistant general manager R.J. Gillen has been requested to interview for the open GM role of the Minnesota Vikings.

Gillen, a former national champion at LSU back in 2007, has consulted with multiple teams across multiple leagues in his executive career, which has lasted well over a decade.

If the Vikings are looking to fill their vacant GM role in a big way, hiring Gillen could be a great start. That is, if they get the opportunity to interview him soon. In the NFL, if you are interested in making a splash hire at any position in the organization, you want someone with experience. It is also a nice bonus when that experience comes with a winning organization.

The 49ers have been one of the top teams in the NFL, generally speaking, since Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan took over in 2017. San Francisco has built a roster that has been a Super Bowl contender for the last seven seasons. If injuries had not come into effect, perhaps the organization would already have another Super Bowl ring.

Gillen has held roles as a scout, director of pro personnel, director of player personnel, and assistant general manager in his 11 years with the club. In his late 30s, he is a bright, ascending mind. Could the Vikings tab him for their GM role?

The Minnesota Vikings Need New Direction

While Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell has proven how good a coach he can be, the team has lacked consistency. This is especially true at the quarterback position. With young signal-caller J.J. McCarthy struggling mightily through his first couple of seasons, the team is hoping Pro Bowl veteran Kyler Murray can pick up the slack.

But after former GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah‘s odd exit, the Vikings need a long-term answer at the top of the organization. That answer could come in the form of Gillen. Much like O’Connell, he would be coming over from the NFC West, which could be another fascinating similarity in this situation for Minnesota.

In 2025, the Vikings essentially finished last in the NFC North and need to find long-term answers outside of almost everyone not named Justin Jefferson. With the NFC North set to be one of the toughest divisions in the NFL this year, it will be wise to find a new direction at the top. This could all start with hiring a young executive like Gillen at this stage of his career. All eyes will be on Minnesota as it looks to fill this position before the start of the upcoming season.
