The Golden State Warriors have a head coach for at least the next two seasons, which equates only to good news for the franchise with regards to Steph Curry and his future.

Head coach Steve Kerr, who has led the franchise to six NBA Finals appearances and four titles over 12 years, has agreed to return on a two-year deal that keeps him under contract through the 2027-28 season.

“Per a league source, Kerr will remain the highest-paid coach in the NBA. While his new salary is not known, he was previously making $17.5 million annually,” Nick Friedell, Sam Amick and Joe Vardon of The Athletic reported on Saturday, May 9.

“Kerr, 60, decided not to sign a contract extension before the season and was content letting the year play out without a new deal,” they continued. “The feeling over the last few months was that Kerr would decide to return, but that outlook shifted quickly at the end of the Warriors’ season-ending loss to the Suns.”

Curry remains under contract for one more year at a total of $59.6 million. However, based on things both he and Kerr have said in recent weeks, all signs now point to Curry also getting a new deal sooner than later and their partnership in Golden State extending beyond next season.

The superstar point guard is eligible for an extension this offseason and has spoken openly about wanting to return to Golden State and play multiple more years in the league.

Curry turned 38 years old in March but remains a premier player. He averaged 26.6 points per game and shot better than 39 percent from behind the 3-point line on 11.3 attempts nightly during his 12th All-Star campaign in 2025-26. Next year will be Curry’s 18th in the league, but prominent insiders have reported that extension talks are coming this summer.

“With Kerr back and Curry under contract for one more season — and expected to have extension conversations later this summer, league sources said — the front office intends to be aggressive in rearranging the team to better compete for a playoff spot in a crowded conference,” Shams Charania, Anthony Slater and Ramona Shelburne of ESPN reported Saturday.

Draymond Green’s Future With Warriors Now Biggest Question

Kerr has been adamant that he won’t “leave” Curry behind for any other team.

“I don’t want to walk away from Steph,” Kerr said recently, per The Athletic’s report. “I’m definitely not going and coaching somewhere else next year in the NBA. I would never walk away from Steph.”

Meanwhile, Curry has said he wants Kerr to do whatever makes him happiest.

“I want him to be excited about the job, I want him to believe he’s the right guy for the job, I want him to have an opportunity to enjoy what he does,” Curry said following the Warriors’ loss to Phoenix in the play-in tournament, per ESPN’s report. “He knows how I feel about him. That shouldn’t even need to be said.”

The biggest questions now involve how Golden State will approach free agency, the trade market and a potential extension for Draymond Green. Green said recently that he is open to a “fair” discussion about returning to the Warriors on a new contract of his own. What that means, however, is open to some interpretation.

Green said he does not see himself playing for another franchise, but that Golden State must reciprocate those feelings. The four-time champion is under contract through 2026-27 on a player option valued at $27.7 million.
