Joel Embiid Could Be Back for Game 3 of Sixers-Knicks

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid is reported as day-to-day by ESPN, making him a potential player for Game 3 against the Knicks.

Joel Embiid will not play in Game 2 against the New York Knicks , but the Philadelphia 76ers star’s next possible return date is not far away.

ESPN’s Lisa Salters reported ahead of the game that Embiid is considered day-to-day going forward.

The Sixers ruled Embiid out for Game 2 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series because of a right ankle sprain and right hip soreness. Game 3 is scheduled for Friday, May 8, in Philadelphia, giving Embiid a two-day window before the series shifts from Madison Square Garden to the Sixers’ home floor.

That makes this more than a one-night injury note. Philadelphia is already down 1-0 after a 137-98 loss in Game 1, and the Sixers now have to survive at least one playoff game without the player their offense and half-court identity are built around.

Joel Embiid Is Out Tonight and His Game 3 Status Is Now the Sixers’ Biggest Question

There is no official guarantee that Embiid will return in Game 3. The clearest way to frame the situation is this: he is out for Game 2, and Game 3 is his next chance to play. A day-to-day tag means there’s at least a chance he’ll play, and not immediately ruled out.

The injury update changed quickly Wednesday. Embiid had initially been listed as probable with the ankle issue before the team ruled him out with both the ankle sprain and hip soreness. ESPN reported that he missed the team’s morning shootaround because of increased soreness.

Sixers coach Nick Nurse told reporters Embiid “woke up with a bunch of soreness,” according to CBS Sports.

That matters because this is not a normal missed game in January. Embiid recently returned from an emergency appendectomy and played the final four games of Philadelphia’s first-round series win over the Boston Celtics. Reuters reported he averaged 28.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists in those four games.

In other words, the question is not only whether Embiid can tolerate the ankle and hip discomfort. It is whether he can do it while coming off a demanding first-round series, a recent surgical recovery and a Game 1 performance in which he did not look like himself.

Joel Embiid Has Not Been Ruled Out For the Rest of the Season

Embiid’s absence immediately changes Philadelphia’s offensive math. Without him, the Sixers lose their best low-post scorer, their most reliable free-throw generator and the player who forces the Knicks to defend deeper into the paint.

Andre Drummond is the obvious replacement in the starting lineup, but the job description is different. Drummond can rebound, screen and give Philadelphia size, but he does not force the same double teams or create the same spacing decisions that Embiid does.

That puts more creation pressure on Tyrese Maxey. It also makes Philadelphia more dependent on guard scoring, transition chances and second-chance points. Against a Knicks team that already controlled Game 1, that is a difficult formula.

Game 3 Could Define the Series for Philadelphia

Game 3 is scheduled for Friday night in Philadelphia, with Game 4 set for Sunday. That creates a tight recovery window but also gives the Sixers a natural target if Embiid responds well after sitting out Game 2.

The risk is obvious. If Philadelphia loses Game 2 without him, Game 3 becomes close to a must-have spot. Falling behind 3-0 would leave the Sixers with almost no margin for error.

The opportunity is just as clear. A home Game 3 return would change the energy of the series and could force the Knicks to rework the same defensive plan that looked comfortable in the opener.

For now, the next official injury report is the thing that matters most. If Embiid is listed as questionable or probable for Game 3, the Sixers will have a real chance of getting him back. If he remains out or is downgraded again, Philadelphia’s path gets much narrower.

The Sixers do not need Embiid to be perfect to make Game 3 interesting. They need him healthy enough to bend the Knicks’ defense, punish mismatches and give Philadelphia a chance to play through its best player again.
