Victor Wembanyama Takes Veiled Shot At Teammates After Spurs’ Game 1 Loss

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - MAY 04: Victor Wembanyama #1 of the San Antonio Spurs looks on from the bench during the second half of a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game One of the Second Round of the NBA Western Conference Playoffs at Frost Bank Center on May 04, 2026 in San Antonio, Texas.

Victor Wembanyama‘s historic stat line and heroics on the defensive end of the floor weren’t enough to see the San Antonio Spurs take a Game 1 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round of the NBA Playoffs.

While Wembanyama set a postseason record with 12 blocks while also becoming the youngest center in league history to record a triple-double in the playoffs, the Spurs’ offense as a whole didn’t have its best night.

After falling just short to the Timberwolves, in a game in which San Antonio scored only 102 points, Wembanyama was clear about what he and his teammates did wrong in Game 1.

Victor Wembanyama On Spurs’ Game 1 Loss To Timberwolves

GettySAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – APRIL 28: Julian Champagnie #30 and Victor Wembanyama #1 of the San Antonio Spurs celebrate after being removed from the game against the Portland Trail Blazers during the fourth quarter in Game Five of the First Round of the NBA Western Conference Playoffs at Frost Bank Center on April 28, 2026 in San Antonio, Texas.

Despite the franchise centerpiece for the Spurs putting up one of the best defensive performances in NBA playoff history, his offense, as well as that of his teammates, couldn’t put together a run to put the Timberwolves away in Game 1.

As a team, San Antonio shot 45% from the field, but just 28% from three, but their 102 points were the lowest of their six postseason games so far. After the loss, Wembanyama criticized himself and took a slight shot at his teammates for how the Spurs played on the offensive end of the floor.

Wemby:

“If I had been better and if the offensive leaders on our team had been better it would have been different. So basically if everything was different it would have been different”

“If I had been better, if the offensive leaders on our team would have been better, it would have been different,” he said postgame. “So, basically, if everything was different, it would have been different.”

The Spurs other top offensive options, De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper, all combined for 45 points but on 16/35 shooting. Wembanyama himself had just 11 points on 5/17 shooting, and no San Antonio player scored more than 18 points in Game 1.

Wembanyama added that he used a lot of his energy on the defensive end of the floor, but that he ‘used too much energy on things that didn’t really help our team.’

The Spurs scored 30 fourth-quarter points, but amid a strong Anthony Edwards run, it wasn’t enough. Julian Champagnie had the chance to win the game at the buzzer, but missed. Now, after Game 1, the Timberwolves have a surprise 1-0 series lead.

Wembanyama’s Historic Performance In Spurs’ Game 1 Loss

GettySAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – MAY 04: Rudy Gobert #27 of the Minnesota Timberwolves works against Victor Wembanyama #1 of the San Antonio Spurs during the first quarter in Game One of the Second Round of the NBA Western Conference Playoffs at Frost Bank Center on May 04, 2026 in San Antonio, Texas.

Wembanyama finished the night with 11 points, 15 rebounds, and 12 blocks, the last of which are the most recorded in NBA playoff history.

He became the youngest player in league history to record a triple-double with blocks, and just one of just three centers to do it in playoff history. The star was also the youngest player in Spurs’ franchise history to record a triple-double, yet again passing the legendary Tim Duncan in another area.

However, on offense, he shot a postseason-low 29% from the field, as those 11 points weren’t enough to vault San Antonio to a win.

“Honestly, I need to look at the film again to see a little bit more, the dynamics,” he added postgame, per Michael C. Wright of ESPN. “Right now, it’s a little bit blurry for me. I think I played the last 16 minutes of the game, maybe, and it just went by like this. That’s not good. It means I didn’t have the grasp on the game that I wish I did.”

Despite his historic stat line, Edwards and the Timberwolves found a way to take Game 1 on the road. As a team with much more playoff experience against a Wembanyama-led Spurs squad seeing their first real test of postseason action, as was the case in Game 1, this series could come down to who knows more about how to win in the playoffs.

Still, if Wembanyama can put together defensive performances that even come close to what he did on Monday night, that alone can give the Spurs a chance to advance to the Conference Finals. For now, though, the Timberwolves are up 1-0 against them.
