The Detroit Tigers need some offense if they want to contend for a World Series title. The Astros have somebody that might make sense.
The Detroit Tigers have reached the postseason as a wild card team in each of the past two seasons. They made it to the American League Division Series in 2025 and fell just short against the Seattle Mariners last fall.
One thing the Tigers might be missing however, is a true middle-of-the-order bat that is proven and has a track record of success. They have some hitters in their lineup, but not that true threat to build around.
The Houston Astros may be sellers at the trade deadline if they cannot overcome their 10-16 start to the 2026 season. In that case, Yordan Alvarez could be an interesting trade candidate. Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report lists the Tigers as a possible landing spot if the Astros trade him.
“Detroit’s lineup still lacks a guy who does for the offense what Tarik Skubal does for the rotation,” Rymer wrote. “Basically, someone to be the can’t-miss threat who can turn a game or a short playoff series around in a hurry.
“Alvarez is a hitter who can fill that role, and it’s a nice bonus that he’d get to reunite with manager A.J. Hinch. He’d have to get creative with how to use Alvarez in tandem with Greene and Carpenter, but that wouldn’t be an impossible puzzle.”
Tigers Identified as Trade Fit for Alvarez
Alvarez is off to a red-hot start with the Astros, hitting .347/.466/.779 with 11 home runs, 26 RBI and a 1.245 OPS. The Tigers have plenty of prospects to spare if they want to make a move to acquire Alvarez and reunite him with Hinch, who was his manager in Houston in 2019, his rookie season.
Alvarez would give Detroit a big bat to build around, and he also is under contract through the 2028 season, so they would have him for at least a few years and could then potentially work on giving him a contract extension down the road.
This could give the Tigers the edge they need to bring home their first AL Central title since 2014. They are currently just a half-game back of the Cleveland Guardians in the division, but a potential move such as this would certainly move the needle and make them a threat to get to the top and separate themselves from the rest of the pack.
A Good Time to Splurge
This is the last year that Tarik Skubal will be under contract with Detroit barring an extension. It would make sense for them to go all out and try to land another star to enhance their chances of a World Series run while they still have Skubal on the team.
They have the prospects necessary to pull off such a deal, and if they do pull it off, the rest of the AL Central will be put on notice in the second half of the season, as the Tigers would then be the clear favorites to win the division.
Detroit needs a centerpiece, and Alvarez is the perfect player to be that centerpiece that they need, so it will be interesting to see if they make a run at him.
