Azzi Fudd’s first WNBA basket will always be tied to Caitlin Clark, and not just because the Dallas Wings were playing the Indiana Fever. Known for her long-range shooting prowess, Fudd fittingly scored her first WNBA bucket on a three-point shot.

The No. 1 overall pick hit a corner three as Clark pushed to close out in an unsuccessful attempt to disrupt the shot. There was plenty of star power in the the team’s opening game as the past four No. 1 picks squared off.

“It’s crazy,” Clark previously noted on the Wings-Fever game, per The Mirror. “Actually, in that game, the last four No. 1 picks will be playing.

“So I don’t know how many times that’s ever happened. Obviously, with me and my teammate (Aliyah Boston), and then Azzi and Paige, so pretty cool dynamic, and I think it just speaks to the excitement of the players in our league,” Clark added.

“Obviously, the talent level that has been coming in, and I think it should be a really great game. We played in the preseason. Obviously that’s completely different, but I expect our arena to be a really loud, fun environment.”

Here’s a look at Fudd’s first basket on Clark.

Azzi Fudd Stats: Wings Star Only Scored 3 Points vs. Caitlin Clark’s Fever in WNBA Debut

Fudd and the Wings were able to upset the Fever 107-104 in a thrilling WNBA opener. It marked the first WNBA season opener where both team’s topped 100 points in their first game.

It is going to take time for Fudd to adjust to the WNBA game. Fudd’s first WNBA basket turned out to be her only points of the contest.

The No. 1 pick posted three points, one rebound and one steal in 18 minutes versus the Fever. Indiana had several chances to send the game into overtime, but the Wings were able to escape with a victory.

Caitlin Clark Missed Late Shot for a Chance to Send the Wings-Fever Game Into Overtime

Fudd may not have made a major impact, but the star had plenty of help. Dallas had three players score 20 or more points.

Paige Bueckers notched 20 points, four assists and three rebounds in the win. Despite the loss, Clark also impressed as the star posted 20 points, seven assists and five rebounds in a losing effort.

Clark is one of several Fever players who had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds but came up short with a missed three.

Paige Bueckers on Azzi Fudd Being the No. 1 Pick: ‘It Had Nothing to Do With Me’

Heading into the WNBA season, Bueckers sent a strong message on Fudd being selected as the No. 1 pick based on her own merits. Fudd and Bueckers were former teammates at UConn.

“Azzi Fudd was the No. 1 draft pick because she earned it, and it had nothing to do with me, and everything to do with who she is as a human being, who she is as a basketball player, her resilience, her strength, and her career-best year at UConn,” Bueckers noted on April 27, per The Athletic’s Sabreena Merchant.
