Yankees former top prospect Jasson Dominguez exited Thursday’s game after just one batter with an injury caused by running into the wall.

New York Yankees outfielder Jasson Domínguez was taken to a New York hospital for tests after exiting Thursday’s game against the Texas Rangers.

Domínguez was carted off the field after just one batter with an apparent head injury, possibly a concussion. The outfielder was also apparently experiencing discomfort in his left shoulder.

Domínguez tested negative for a concussion, according to Yankees manager Aaron Boone, but did suffer “a low-grade AC sprain in his shoulder,” The Athletic Yankees correspondent Chris Kirschner reported.

Domínguez collided with the Yankee Stadium left-field wall while making a running catch of a fly ball off the bat of Texas Rangers leadoff hitter Brandon Nimmo.

Domínguez, who lay motionless on the ground for a prolonged period of time after colliding with the wall, was also tested for a concussion while still on the field, but the Yankees did not immediately release details on the 23-year-old former top prospect’s injury. Domínguez appeared to suffer a head impact against the wall.

Possible Signs of Concussion for Domínguez

According to MLB.com Yankees correspondent Bryan Hoch, Domínguez “is shaking his head as they drive him off in a medical cart.”

A “spontaneous head shake” after an impact with the skull is recognized as a sign of possible concussion, according to a 2024 research study by doctors at Harvard Medical School and Boston University.

Video of Domínguez riding in the cart, seated upright and conscious, appeared to show the fourth-year outfielder wiping tears from his eyes. The SNY network social media account described Domínguez as “emotional,” but sudden crying can also be a symptom of concussion, according to Michigan-based neurologist Matthew Lorincz.

“Right after the injury, you might cry out of the blue and not know why,” Lorincz told Michigan Medicine.

Domínguez Collided With Video Screen

The left-field wall at Yankee Stadium doubles as a video screen.

“I don’t even know why there’s video boards on the outfield walls at all. They just seem like a huge risk,” wrote sports commentator Mark Quill on his social media account. “Especially if you have outfielders banging into the walls to make catches like what happened with Jasson Domínguez there.”

“Dominguez just made an awesome catch leaping back into the wall but then immediately went face down and hasn’t gotten up,” SNY MLB writer Chelsea Janes reported immediately after the catch. “Appears to be moving, but a cart is out. Boone and the trainers ran out with urgency.”

“Jasson Domínguez made a fantastic catch slamming into the wall. He is now face down, being tended to by the training staff,” The Athletic Yankees beat reporter Chris Kirschner described. “After a lengthy examination, Domínguez is leaving the game on a cart.”

Yankees Teammates Gather Around Fallen Outfielder

New York Post reporter Mark W. Sanchez described what he called “an extraordinary scene” on the Yankee Stadium field after Domínguez crashed into the wall.

“Several Yankees — Aaron Judge, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Cody Bellinger, Trent Grisham and Amed Rosario — grouped together on the warning track in left field, nearby manager Aaron Boone and several trainers. Both dugouts were filled with players and coaches on the top step peering over,” the Post reporter wrote. “Such was the concern over Jasson Domínguez, who made a remarkable play that came with a cost.”

After Domínguez exited the game, “Amed Rosario moved from third base to right field,” according to a report by Hoch, “with Cody Bellinger shifting from right field to left field. Ryan McMahon entered the game at third base, leaving the Yanks with a short bench for the afternoon.”

The Yankees were expected to issue a further update on Domínguez before Thursday’s game ended.
