On Saturday afternoon, the Boston Red Sox had their best win of the season when they beat the Orioles (in Baltimore) by a score of 17-1.

The Red Sox were led by Willson Contreras, who had two hits, one home run and five RBI’s.

After the game, news came out that the Red Sox are firing manager Alex Cora.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote: “The Boston Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora, hitting coach Peter Fatse, bench coach Rámon Vazquez and game-planning coach Jason Varitek, sources tell ESPN. While the Red Sox won today, they are 10-17 and in last in the American League East. Massive change is coming in Boston.”

Cora had been at the helm for part of eight seasons.

He helped lead them to the 2018 World Series Championship.

Over 1,161 games, Cora went 620-541

MLB World Reacts To Alex Cora News

Here’s what people were saying on social media:

Chris Cotillo: “An unbelievable shakeup has hit the Red Sox.”

Buster Olney: “Alex Cora fired less than halfway into a three-year, $21.75 million deal he negotiated in the summer of 2024. Jason Varitek dumped in April, in his 30th year affiliated with the Red Sox. Other coaches let go. This is unequivocally Craig Breslow’s organization.”

Jake Mintz: “Alex Cora out in Boston. Something seemed amiss yesterday when I went up to Baltimore to see the Sox. Cora was 45 mins late to talk to the media pre-game with no real explanation or apology. Was notably snippy and on edge with us during that conversation.”

David P. Samson: “Decisions like this are made before game today and once in motion, there is usually no going back. So the 17-1 victory this afternoon did not matter.”

Steve Perrault: “Truly stunned that Alex Cora is out as the manager of the Boston Red Sox. He ends up 3rd all-time in wins for Sox managers with 620. Never thought this would happen right now. Obviously the team has massively underperformed, but certainly didn’t see this coming in April.”

Dave Portnoy: “Who is the manager tomorrow? It’s actually comical that Breslow and Henry are taking zero accountability”

Zack Cox: “Very curious to see how the Sox plan to replace all of these coaches before 1:35 p.m. tomorrow.”

Bob Nightengale: “Alex Cora will now be the hottest commodity for the next managerial vacancy, and it’s no secret that he has a close relationship with Phillies president Dave Dombrowski”

Looking At The Red Sox

The Red Sox are currently at the bottom of the American League East with a 10-17 record in 27 games.

After one more game against Baltimore, they will visit the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday in Canada.

Last season, the Red Sox lost to the New York Yankees in the Wild Card Round.
