Bronny James Out, Austin Reaves In? Lakers Insider Has Surprising Answer

Bronny James has shown growth in limited playoff minutes, creating a new rotation question for the Lakers with Austin Reaves nearing a return.

The Los Angeles Lakers could be on the verge of getting Austin Reaves back for Game 5 — and that development is creating a new question about Bronny James’ place in the rotation.

Austin Reaves Return Timeline Points to Game 5 Availability

Austin Reaves and JJ Redick during a Lakers game as Reaves’ recovery progress remains uncertain

GettyAustin Reaves speaks with Lakers coach JJ Redick during a game as his return finally gets a clear path.

According to ESPN insider Shams Charania, Reaves is trending toward a potential return as soon as Wednesday.

“Austin Reaves, we’ll see the next couple of days how he feels,” Charania said on The Pat McAfee Show. “He could play on Wednesday. He was a game-time decision for Game 3 and Game 4. There was a chance he was going to play.”

Reaves has been recovering from a Grade 2 oblique strain, an injury that typically carries a four-to-six-week recovery timeline.

“That four-week period is coming up here closer to the end of this week,” Charania added. “I think Game 5 is very much within realm for him.”

Lakers Insider Expects Limited Role for Austin Reaves

Jovan Buha, formerly of The Athletic, who now covers the Lakers independently through his podcast Buha’s Block, said even if Reaves returns, it may not be in a full workload.

“I do expect him to come off the bench,” Buha said. “And I would expect him to be on some sort of minutes restriction if he is able to return in Game 5.”

That expectation is critical to how the Lakers may approach their rotation.

Rather than immediately restoring Reaves to his full role, the team could ease him back in — potentially in an 18-to-20-minute range — as he regains conditioning and rhythm.

Bronny James Building Momentum in Lakers Rotation

While Reaves has been sidelined, Bronny has taken advantage of his opportunity.

Even in a 115-96 Game 4 loss to the Houston Rockets, he showed flashes of growth, finishing with five points, two rebounds and four assists in 15 minutes.

His recent production has also ticked upward.

After going scoreless in the first two games of the series, Bronny has averaged 5.0 points, 2.0 assists and 1.0 rebound in 12.3 minutes over the last two games, shooting 40% from three-point range.

That marks a notable improvement from his regular-season averages of 2.9 points, 1.2 assists and 0.5 rebounds across 42 games.

Lakers Rotation Decision Complicated by Bronny’s Play

Buha said Bronny’s progress has made the decision less straightforward than it once appeared.

“Bronny has been playing better,” Buha said. “But obviously Austin is a much better player than Bronny. So I don’t know if you give all those minutes to Austin or you still keep Bronny in, maybe in a one-shift role.”

That uncertainty reflects a broader shift — Bronny has moved from a developmental option to a player who can provide situational value in a playoff setting.

Minutes Distribution Could Be Key for Lakers

Instead of removing Bronny entirely, Buha suggested a more balanced approach — redistributing minutes across the rotation.

“I think taking away some of the minutes from Jake [LaRavia] and taking a little less from Marcus [Smart], Luke [Kennard], Rui [Hachimura] — I think those guys can all have a few of their minutes shaved off,” Buha said.

That strategy could help keep key contributors fresher.

“If you could get those guys in more of the 35-to-38-minute range rather than 38 to 41, that keeps them fresher,” he added. “I think that’s a more sustainable approach.”

Bronny James Could Remain a Factor Even With Reaves Back

The Lakers’ Game 4 loss exposed issues with ball security and offensive flow — areas Reaves could help stabilize upon his return.

But Bronny brings a different element: defensive energy, ball pressure and improving confidence as a secondary playmaker.

Even if his role shrinks, it may not disappear.

With Reaves likely easing back into action and the Lakers trying to close out the series, Bronny’s emergence has created a new layer to the rotation puzzle — one that may not have a simple answer.
