Braves No. 2 prospect JR Ritchie.

The Atlanta Braves are finishing their four-game series with the Washington Nationals on April 23. On the mound for the Braves is 22-year-old rookie JR Ritchie, who is making his MLB debut.

Ritchie is hoping to lead the Braves to their eighth win in their last nine games. Regardless of the result, Atlanta will still maintain its streak of not losing a series yet this season.

Atlanta took Game 1, 9-4, then lost Game 2, 11-4, but bounced back with an 8-6 win in Game 3.

The Braves’ hope of taking three out of four did not start well, however.

JR Ritchie Gets Rough Welcome In MLB Debut

Ritchie received an abrupt welcome to the big leagues. Nationals RF James Wood took a 93 mph four-seam fastball 375 feet to right field on Ritchie’s very first pitch in the majors to make it 1-0.

Cameras showed Ritchie’s parents, Ian and Viktoria Ritchie, in the stands just before their son threw the first pitch.

“There should be a rule against hitting someone’s 1st MLB pitch for a home run,” Rob Friedman posted.

The good news for the young pitcher is that he bounced right back. He retired Luis Garcia Jr. on a groundout to second, then recorded his first major league strikeout against Jose Tena, followed by a CJ Abrams flyout to left.

For a young pitcher making his debut on the road, that kind of response matters. It would have been easy for the moment to snowball after surrendering a home run immediately, but Ritchie quickly settled in and showed the poise that helped earn this opportunity.

Why Braves Called On JR Ritchie

Ritchie was promoted to make the start after Atlanta needed a fresh arm to close out the series in Washington. The Braves had already leaned heavily on their pitching staff over the previous two games, leaving the club in need of a starter who could provide real innings.

Several relief options had already been used, while the rotation remains in flux due to injuries and ongoing roster management decisions. That opened the door for one of the organization’s top young arms.

The former supplemental first-round pick from the 2022 MLB Draft had been dominant at Triple-A Gwinnett to begin the season. Entering Thursday, he had allowed only three earned runs across 27 1/3 innings while missing bats at an impressive rate.

That performance made it difficult for the Braves to ignore what he was doing.

According to Baseball America, Ritchie is the No. 2 prospect in Atlanta’s farm system. The outlet has praised his deep pitch mix and long-term upside as a future major league starter. He ranks 71st overall in the Top 100 prospects.

Even if this turns out to be only one start for now, it is still an important glimpse into Atlanta’s future.

The Braves know they will need pitching depth over a long season, especially if they want to continue dominating the NL East. Whether Ritchie heads back to Triple-A after this outing or stays longer, he has already taken a major step in his development.
