Rain caused more problems for the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series at Watkins Glen International after officials canceled Kennametal Pole qualifying for the Mission 200 on Saturday. Wet conditions and standing water around the 2.45-mile road course made qualifying unsafe, forcing NASCAR to set the starting lineup by rulebook instead of lap times.

The weather issues added another setback to an already difficult race event at Watkins Glen, where rain, mud, and cold temperatures affected teams and fans throughout the week.

NASCAR confirmed the field using its performance-metrics formula, placing Rajah Caruth on pole. The cancellation also followed a similar washout for ARCA Menards Series qualifying earlier in the event, as steady rain continued across the area.

NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Qualifying Canceled as Rain Soaks Watkins Glen

NASCAR officials made the decision after checking track conditions Saturday morning. Standing water and steady rain showers created unsafe conditions for single-car qualifying runs at Watkins Glen. NASCAR Communications later confirmed that the starting lineup would be determined by the sport’s performance-metrics formula rather than on-track qualifying.

The formula uses a weighted average based on 70 percent of the previous race finish and 30 percent of the owner’s points standings. That process moved Rajah Caruth to the pole position while Justin Allgaier secured the second starting spot.

The rain also disrupted other racing sessions during the event. ARCA Menards Series qualifying was canceled on Friday due to poor weather, with officials using owner points to set the lineup. Teams spent much of the weekend preparing for changing track conditions and possible wet-weather racing.

Watkins Glen Weather Creates Problems Across NASCAR Weekend

The move to an early May race date brought difficult weather conditions to Watkins Glen throughout the event. Temperatures stayed in the 50s, while steady rain left campgrounds muddy and soaked parking areas for fans attending the race weekend. Track officials temporarily paused camper entries earlier in the week because of the conditions.

Despite the weather, NASCAR still completed practice sessions for the Mission 200. Brent Crews posted the fastest lap in practice ahead of Connor Zilisch and Shane van Gisbergen. Teams used the sessions to collect information for both dry and wet setups before the race.

Watkins Glen remains one of NASCAR’s most difficult road courses because of its fast straights, technical corners, and changing weather conditions. Drivers often face major tire and strategy decisions when rain affects the track surface.

NASCAR Watkins Glen Event Still Faces More Weather Concerns

The weather concerns may continue for the rest of the NASCAR action at Watkins Glen. Cup Series practice and qualifying were also under threat from rain Saturday afternoon, with forecasts showing more showers moving through the area.

The Go Bowling at The Glen Cup Series race remains scheduled for Sunday at 3:00 p.m. ET on FS1. Teams continue preparing for possible rain tires, cautions, and changing track conditions if wet weather returns during the race.

NASCAR has already confirmed Watkins Glen will return to its traditional September playoff date in 2027 after this season’s move to May created several weather-related issues across the event.
