Nick Caserio's methods for building the Houston Texans' roster have drawn plenty of attention.

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio has garnered attention for his aggressiveness in building up one of the NFL’s best rosters.

The Texans were one win away from the AFC Championship Game in 2025, and Caserio’s latest efforts yielded several prospects who fit the mold of what Caserio and head coach DeMeco Ryans want.

However, that attention includes scrutiny from peers who see a veritable powder keg.

Rival Exec Wary of Texans GM Nick Caserio’s Approach

Caserio is entering his sixth season as the Texans’ GM, and the fourth as executive vice president of the organization. He was relatively tame in this year’s draft, specifically in the trade market, but still selected players with picks used in trades in all but one instance.

Along with the player acquisition, Caserio has taken a maverick approach with extensions for the Texans’ top players.

“Houston doesn’t care about anything,” an unnamed rival executive said of Caserio’s aggressive approach, per The Athletic’s Mike Sando in an article on May 1. “If you look even at their extensions, they don’t just set the market. They set the market. They are not really taking their time or being patient.”

That is where things could get dicey.

“The thing I wonder about Houston is, what is their plan? They have a good team. I don’t know how they are going to keep it together,” another unnamed exec said, per Sando. “They are paying top of the market on short deals for all their best players. That is not sustainable.”

That executive also questioned the Texans’ selection of tight end Marlin Klein in the second round, but Caserio explained that, too.

The Texans “tried” making more trades during the draft.

“There were multiple scenarios that we had on the board at different points,” Caserio said on “Up & Adams” on April 30. “Around pick [No.] 59, there was about two or three trades that were pretty close to materializing, but they kind of fell through. Team either moved above us or moved around us, or they made a trade behind us. So, just the way that it works sometimes.”

Texans Resolved Salary Cap Quandary

Caserio and the Texans plan on winning a Super Bowl. That requires accumulating as many good players on the same roster as possible. However, it is not without its hurdles, which they encountered–and overcame–heading into this offseason.

Houston was $14.2 million over the salary cap when the 2026 offseason began.

The Texans are $12.9 million below the threshold as of May 1, per Over The Cap, even after free agency.

Their rookie signings will lower that figure. However, the Texans’ books are clearer going forward, even with Azeez Al-Shaair and Will Anderson Jr. joining Derek Stingley Jr. and Jalen Pitre on the extended list.

That is, at least until the Texans extend quarterback C.J. Stroud.

That will change the calculus for Caserio and the Texans’ front office, but they have already shown the acumen to right the ship as needed, and it certainly will be.
