Kayden McDonald is already making a strong impression on the Houston Texans.

Kayden McDonald hit the practice field for the first time with the Houston Texans in rookie minicamp, and he has already garnered attention.

His draft pedigree helps.

McDonald was a second-round pick, taken 36th overall, with the Texans’ second selection of the cycle. He has long been viewed as a strong potential fit with the Texans. McDonald got off to a fitting start on Day 1 on the field in rookie minicamp.

DeMeco Ryans Praises Kayden McDonald

McDonald represents a significant shift for the Texans. They have not invested in a player like the rookie from a draft capital or body type standpoint during Ryans’ tenure. Their last second-round DT was Ross Blacklock in 2020.

Roy Lopez (sixth-round, 2021) is the most recent player the Texans drafted with a similar physical profile, and he is listed as being 14 pounds lighter than McDonald.

Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans certainly appreciates what McDonald brings.

“What I like about Kayden from his tape at Ohio State was the physicality; it shows up. When he was across the line from the offensive lineman, and no matter who it was, he was knocking those guys back in the backfield. That translates to Houston Texans defense. We want to knock guys back. He does that. He’s still a very young player who has so much room to grow, so much room to ascend,” Rams told reporters on May 8.

“It starts right here today. You see him in his individual drills, he has the power. We can win with that type of power.”

McDonald said that his personal goals are to earn All-Pro, Rookie of the Year,  and win a Super Bowl, the latter of which he stated first.

At the very least, McDonald knows what the goal is for the Texans.

“Just getting out there with my teammates. Rookie minicamp. We all got energy, all enthusiasm, and it’s a great opportunity,” McDonald said when asked if his new reality as an NFL player had sunk in yet. “At the end of the day, we want to get to LA and win the Super Bowl.”

McDonald also believes that the Texans are well-equipped to get there, at least as far as his side of the football is concerned.

McDonald also spoke about his slide in the draft from Round 1 into Round 2, where the Texans traded up to select him. He went viral for his tearful reaction, a supportive message from his family, and his post-selection interaction with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Despite the drama of the day, McDonald believes fate has brought him to the Texans.

“Everything happens for a reason,” McDonald told media members. “Now, I’m on the best defense in the league.”

The Texans ranked first overall and second in scoring defensively, and they were fourth against the run, where McDonald figures to make his greatest impact. However, if McDonald can elevate the group as the Texans hope, they could be even more staunch next season.

Houston also dealt with various injuries that reshaped their defensive tackle group last season.

McDonald is part of a rejuvenation on that front.  He joins free agent signing Logan Hall. Hall will take snaps inside at tackle and outside at his traditional defensive end spot.
