Kawhi Leonard reacts during a game for the Los Angeles Clippers as a trade proposal involving an All-Star center gains traction ahead of a pivotal offseason.

The Los Angeles Clippers may be approaching a pivotal offseason — and the spotlight is squarely on Kawhi Leonard.

After falling short despite a late-season push, questions about Leonard’s future are beginning to intensify, with a trade proposal centered on an All-Star center starting to gain traction.

It’s a scenario that could reshape the Clippers’ roster and potentially signal a shift in the franchise’s direction.

ESPN Proposal Outlines Kawhi Leonard Trade Path

The idea, floated by ESPN’s Andre Snellings, presents a clear blueprint for Los Angeles to pivot toward youth without fully committing to a rebuild.

In the proposal, the Clippers would send Leonard and veteran center Brook Lopez to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Alperen Sengun, Reed Sheppard and Steven Adams.

“The Clippers would finally bring the Leonard/George era to a close and inject young veteran talent into one of the oldest rosters in the league,” Snellings wrote.

The proposal reflects a growing belief that Los Angeles may need to reset its timeline while remaining competitive in the Western Conference.

Alperen Sengun as Ivica Zubac Replacement

GettyAlperen Sengun of the Houston Rockets was floated as a potential Ivica Zubac replacement for the LA Clippers.

At the center of the return is Sengun, 23, who projects as a long-term cornerstone.

The young big man would give Los Angeles an All-Star-caliber center under contract for multiple seasons, immediately stabilizing a key position.

Sengun would represent an ideal long-term replacement for Ivica Zubac, whom the Clippers moved at the trade deadline in a package that brought back Bennedict Mathurin, Isaiah Jackson, two first-round picks and a second-rounder. That deal came on the heels of Los Angeles’ earlier Darius Garland–James Harden swap, a move that further fueled speculation about Leonard’s long-term future with the franchise.

Despite a late-season push and a healthy Leonard, the Clippers ultimately fell short, getting eliminated by the Golden State Warriors in the play-in tournament — a result that only intensified questions about the team’s current direction.

Sheppard, 21, adds backcourt versatility as either a starter or high-impact reserve, while Adams provides veteran depth and interior presence.

Bobby Marks: L.A. Stay Competitive While Getting Younger

ESPN front office insider Bobby Marks noted that the trade aligns with the Clippers’ evolving direction.

Rather than tearing the roster down, Los Angeles would get younger while maintaining competitiveness.

“Sengun, 23, would give LA an All-Star center under contract for three more seasons,” Marks wrote. “Sheppard, 21, can start or come off the bench.”

That balance — youth plus immediate contributors — could allow the Clippers to remain relevant in the Western Conference while building for the future.

Rockets’ All-In Push Could Accelerate Clippers’ Timeline Shift

The deal is driven in large part by Houston’s urgency.

Facing mounting pressure after another uneven postseason showing, the Rockets are exploring aggressive win-now moves — including a potential pairing of Kevin Durant and Leonard.

That dynamic creates an opportunity for the Clippers.

By moving Leonard now, Los Angeles could capitalize on his value while avoiding a prolonged decline tied to age and injuries.

Decision Could Define Clippers’ Next Era

For now, the proposal remains hypothetical.

But it highlights a critical inflection point for the Clippers.

Stick with a veteran core that has yet to deliver sustained postseason success — or pivot toward a younger, more flexible roster built around emerging talent.

Snellings’ scenario offers a clear blueprint for the latter.

And if Los Angeles chooses that path, acquiring Sengun and a young supporting cast could mark the beginning of the franchise’s next era.
