The start of the Truist Championship has been delayed.

Things are off to a slow start at the Truist Championship as the PGA Tour announced a weather delay for today’s opening round. The PGA Tour had already revised the tee times for Thursday, May 7, 2026, and now golfers will not hit the course until even later.

“Due to heavy rain, the first round of the Truist Championship is delayed one hour and is now scheduled to run from Noon – 2:01 p.m. ET in groups of three off Nos. 1 and 10,” the PGA Tour announced on May 7, at 8:47 a.m. Eastern.

Typically tournaments begin several hours earlier, and the first round of the Truist Championship is not scheduled to tee off until 12 p.m. Eastern. This assumes that the weather at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina, cooperates and allows the tournament to begin at the new start time.

Here’s what you need to know about the latest golf news.

Truist Championship: When Will PGA Tournament Start Today?

On Wednesday, May 6, the PGA Tour previously announced that the tee times had initially been pushed back to an 11 a.m. Eastern start time. Now, the Truist Championship will start even later.

“Due to impending inclement weather in Thursday’s forecast, tee times for the first and second round of the Truist Championship will be adjusted to approximately 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. ET in groups of three off Nos. 1 and 10,” the PGA Tour detailed in a May 6, message on X.

Truist Championship Weather Forecast Predicts a ‘Soaking Wet Day’ at Quail Hollow

The Truist Championship is now expected to start on Thursday at 12 p.m. Eastern with groups of three instead of the normal pairings. All this is contingent on the weather clearing up at Quail Hollow.

What can fans expect of the weather for the first round at the Truist Championship? The weather forecast warns of a “soaking wet day” which leads to “delays” on the golf course.

“Cloudy with rain and a thunderstorm, then a leftover shower; a soaking wet day for golf can lead to delays,” the AccuWeather forecast detailed for Thursday, May 7.

More Rain Is Expected at the Truist Championship During the Afternoon

There is a 74% chance of rain at 10 a.m. Eastern, per The Weather Channel. This number drops to 47% at 11 a.m. Eastern but jumps back up to 52% at 12 p.m.

The good news is that the chance of rain drops again to 19% at 1 p.m. Eastern at Quail Hollow. Now for the bad news, there is a 64% chance of rain beginning at 4 p.m. Eastern.

All this calls into question whether there could be another weather delay once the Truist Championship eventually starts.

The Truist Championship Marks the Return of Rory McIlroy

Fans are anticipating the return of Rory McIlroy who has skipped the last three PGA Tour tournaments following his Masters win. McIlroy will not be competing against Scottie Scheffler who opted to skip the Truist Championship and focus on next week’s PGA Championship.

“Winning (2026 Masters) was validation for all the work that I’ve put in over the last few years to get myself back to this place where I’m winning majors,” McIlroy told reporters on May 6, per CBS Sports. “I’m excited for the road ahead. I’m excited for this week.

“I’m excited for Aronimink next week, Shinnecock, [Royal] Birkdale. If anything, I’m more motivated after what happened at Augusta this year than I’ve ever been.”
