Bo Bichette unlikely to stay with Mets.

The New York Mets made a splash by signing Bo Bichette after they lost out on Kyle Tucker.

New York signed Bichette to a three-year, $126 million deal with the Mets. But it has opt-outs after the first and second years. Although the Mets gave Bichette a high AAV, there were still some who thought he would opt out after one season and look for a long-term deal.

However, Bichette has struggled, as most have with the Mets, and MLB insider Bob Nightengale believes the star infielder will opt out and go elsewhere. But he does believe New York could look to trade him.

“Bichette has gotten off to a miserable start (.237, two homers, 16 RBIs) but the two-time All-Star has a glossy resume,” Nightengale wrote. “He signed a three-year, $126 million contract last winter with two opt outs, and considering the season the Mets are having and the boos serenading him, it’s difficult to see him wanting to stay put. And if he leaves a free agent, there will be no qualifying offered attached for the Mets to receive a draft pick. Why not trade him and let his new team deal with the opt-outs?”

If Bichette is going to opt out, the Mets trading him could make some sense. But, New York still could look to keep him for the stretch run and see if they can work out a long-term deal in free agency.

Bichette is hitting .222 with 2 home runs and 16 RBIs this season with the Mets.

Mets Manager Not Worried About Bichette

Bichette has been one of the MLB’s best hitters for years, but he’s struggled with the Mets to begin the year.

Despite the struggles, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza spoke to The New York Post. He said he isn’t worried about Bichette’s slow start.

“It feels like every day there’s one at-bat when he hits a rocket and somebody is making a play,” Mendoza said. “I am not worried about him. The ball is going to find holes. He’s too good a hitter.”

Mendoza, meanwhile, said he just wants Bichette to keep focusing on what he can control. He and the team know Bichette will be able to turn it around.

“He’s just got to continue to focus on the things he can control,” Mendoza said. “Which is to get a good pitch and put a good swing on it.”

Bichette is a two-time MLB All-Star and led the AL in hits twice in 2021 and 2022.

New York Finishes Road Trip With Winning Record

The Mets are coming off a 5-4 road trip, which was a successful one for the team.

However, New York lost the final game of the road trip in an error-filled game, which left the team frustrated with the ending of the road trip.

“We’re better than that, especially the past couple of days,” Mendoza said. “We needed to be better.”

If the Mets are going to go on a run, New York will need the offense to pick up the slack.

“The pitching, they continue to give us chances,” Mendoza said. “They’re keeping us in games, the starters and the relievers, but offensively we have to be better.”

The Mets are 15-25 and last in the NL East.
