The New York Yankees walked into Camden Yards on Tuesday night with four straight losses behind them and an offense that had gone quiet at the worst possible time. They had scored just eight runs during the skid. The bullpen had blown leads. The mood around the team had shifted.
Something had to give.
It did. A five-run third inning ended the drought, Will Warren delivered another strong start, and the Yankees left Baltimore with a 6-2 win that ended four days of frustration.
The win mattered. After the game, the Yankees got good news from their injured shortstop.
Jose Caballero was placed on the injured list Tuesday with a right middle finger injury, prompting the Yankees to recall Anthony Volpe from Triple-A.
It was a necessary move. It was also one Caballero has every intention of making temporary.
“10 days. That’s the max I’m taking,” Caballero said.
Caballero has been impressive to start this season, while Volpe was working his way back. Now Volpe is back in the building, and Caballero knows how quickly these things can shift.
Aaron Boone has been clear that the job still belongs to Caballero. But Caballero is not leaving much room for interpretation. Ten days.

Paul Goldschmidt set the tone immediately, driving the first pitch of the game from Trevor Rogers over the left-field wall. The third inning gave them something bigger.
Austin Wells singled. Aaron Judge and Ben Rice drew back-to-back walks. Cody Bellinger kept the inning alive with a hustle play, and Amed Rosario followed with an infield single that pushed the lead to 3-0.
Then Trent Grisham changed the night.
His three-run homer to center made it 6-0 and gave the Yankees the breathing room they had not had in days. Warren did the rest. He worked 5 2/3 innings, allowed two runs, and struck out six.

Volpe’s return gives the Yankees capable coverage at shortstop while Caballero heals.
The Yankees know what Volpe can do. They also know Caballero is not planning on being gone long.
The Yankees have other decisions coming too.
Gerrit Cole’s return from the injured list is approaching. When he gets back, the rotation conversation becomes more complicated, especially with Warren and Ryan Weathers both making the decision genuinely difficult in recent weeks.

The losing streak is over. The offense found its footing. Warren gave the Yankees the start they needed. That was the immediate takeaway from Tuesday night.
Caballero’s message was another one. With Volpe back in the building and the Yankees trying to steady themselves, Caballero put a clear timeline on his return.
Ten days maximum.
