New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson and assistant coach Rick Brunson during a heated fourth-quarter sideline exchange that drew viral attention in Game 4 vs Hawks.

New York Knicks coach Mike Brown offered a candid and lighthearted response Monday to a viral sideline exchange between Jalen Brunson and his father, Knicks assistant Rick Brunson, during Game 4 of the team’s first-round playoff series against the Atlanta Hawks.

“Jalen is as coachable as they come,” Brown said following Monday’s practice. “If I had to coach his father, that might be different. Sorry, Rick, but Jalen is right up there. He’s up there with the Steph Curry’s of the world.”

The remark came two days after cameras captured an animated fourth-quarter moment between the Brunsons during New York’s 114-98 victory at State Farm Arena — a game that had largely been decided by that point.

Mike Brown Downplays Viral Knicks Sideline Exchange

The interaction quickly circulated across social media, showing Jalen Brunson and Rick Brunson exchanging words, raising their voices and gesturing emphatically before the younger Brunson walked away.

Brown made clear the team views the moment as part of a competitive dynamic rather than a concern.

“They have a unique relationship, and I enjoy every aspect of it,” Brown said.

Mike Brown says Jalen Brunson is “as coachable as they come,” before joking that Rick Brunson is the opposite: “If I had to coach his father, it might be different”

The exchange occurred with the Knicks holding a comfortable lead late in the fourth quarter, as both teams began to turn to their reserves. Even with the outcome largely in hand, the moment reflected the intensity that has defined the series.

Brunson also downplayed the viral moment, insisting there “there’s no debate there.”

“That was two competitors,” he told reporters after the game.

Knicks Even Series Behind Balanced Game 4 Performance

New York’s Game 4 win evened the Eastern Conference first-round series at 2-2 and halted momentum after back-to-back narrow losses.

Karl-Anthony Towns led the Knicks with his first postseason triple-double, finishing with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. He became the fourth player in franchise history to record a playoff triple-double, joining Walt Frazier, Dick McGuire and Josh Hart.

OG Anunoby added 22 points as the Knicks seized control early, building a 68-44 halftime lead and extending that margin to 20 points entering the fourth quarter.

Jalen Brunson Plays Through Injury Scare, Shooting Struggles

Despite the sideline moment drawing attention, Brunson’s performance reflected both resilience and inconsistency.

He finished with 19 points on 7-for-18 shooting, including 3-for-7 from beyond the arc, and committed six turnovers. Brunson also briefly exited in the third quarter after Atlanta guard Dyson Daniels fell onto his ankle during a loose-ball scramble.

The All-Star returned later in the quarter and finished the game, continuing to direct the offense even on an uneven night.

Knicks Defense Contains Hawks’ Offensive Threats

New York’s defensive adjustments proved critical, particularly in limiting CJ McCollum.

McCollum, who had been a major factor earlier in the series, was held to 17 points and did not make a 3-pointer after hitting nine across the first three games.

“We’ve just got to keep trying to find ways to show him different looks,” said Brown after the win.

The Knicks also limited Jalen Johnson and Most Improved Player of the Year Nickeil Alexander-Walker to a combined 9-of-23 shooting, preventing Atlanta from generating the same offensive rhythm seen in previous games.

Series Returns to Madison Square Garden With Momentum Reset

With the series tied, the Knicks will return home for Game 5 at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night, with Game 6 scheduled to be played in Atlanta.

The Game 4 result not only evened the series but reestablished New York’s identity — a team built on defense, depth and competitive edge.

For Brown, the Brunson exchange served as a reflection of that mindset rather than a distraction.

As the series shifts back to New York, the Knicks will look to build on their Game 4 performance and carry that intensity into a pivotal Game 5.
