With the NFL offseason well underway, teams around the league, including the Indianapolis Colts, are trying to put the pieces together to prepare for the 2026 campaign, hoping to field a competitive squad come Week 1.
After a disastrous end to the 2025 NFL season, the Colts have a lot of questions that need to be answered before the start of next season, and some of those questions come at the quarterback position, namely, what does the immediate future hold for Anthony Richardson?
Back in February, Richardson informed the Colts that he would like to be traded, with the team going all in on Daniel Jones, even with the veteran star working his way back from a torn Achilles.
Over the past few months, the Colts haven’t made any progress on a potential Richardson trade, leaving his future in limbo.
Despite having an uncertain future, Richardson chose to report to the team’s voluntary offseason workouts this week, according to Stephen Holder of ESPN.

With the start of the 2026 NFL season many months away, things are set to get underway on Sept. 9. There’s still a chance that Richardson does get moved elsewhere, especially once training camps get started, and teams begin considering making changes at the quarterback position.
In the meantime, Richardson will have to continue going through the motions, hoping that his future will become clearer in the coming months.
However, the Colts seem hopeful that Jones will be ready for Week 1. The veteran quarterback is said to be right on schedule, which is obviously great news moving forward, but it remains to be seen who his backup will be.
The Colts’ current quarterback depth chart has Richardson as the primary backup, followed by Riley Leonard and Seth Henigan.

With Jones recovering from an Achilles injury, which is no easy task, the Colts would be wise to bring in a formidable backup for the 2026 campaign.
Wynston Wilcox of FanSided floated the idea of the Colts trading for Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
“The Indianapolis Colts wouldn’t be foolish to think about trading for Sanders if he becomes available, because he is the perfect insurance,” Wilcox wrote. “The Colts aren’t quite sure how Daniel Jones is going to recover from his Achilles injury. Having someone like Sanders there if things don’t go well, or he’s not ready for the start of the season, isn’t a bad idea.”
Although an intriguing prospect, as Sanders could have a bright future in the NFL in the right situation, it’s uncertain whether the Browns would even consider moving the second-year quarterback.
It’ll be interesting to see what the Colts do over the next few months to address the quarterback position and what potential moves are available to help provide some insurance at the most important position on the football field, as it will be crucial to the team’s success in 2026.
