Steve Kerr has been the head coach of the Golden State Warriors since 2014.

After months of speculation about his future, Steve Kerr has signed a new contract to stay in charge of the Golden State Warriors.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Anthony Slater and Ramona Shelburne, Kerr will returning for his 13th season as Golden State’s coach. He reportedly agreed to a new two-year contract after around two weeks of negotiations with Warriors ownership and front office.

The discussions with owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. involved Kerr’s offensive philosophy, how the roster would shape next season and beyond, and the future of the franchise post-Steph Curry.

NBA World Reacts to Steve Kerr Remaining in Golden State

Here are some of the reactions from the NBA World regarding Steve Kerr’s return as Warriors head coach.

@WarriorsMuse: “At this point, would much rather Steve stay than any high-risk wildcard as a coach.”

@DubNationMedia: “There it is, had a feeling he wasn’t going anywhere until Steph is done playing.”

@DamonBruce: “Kerr remains head coach. He & Curry are ride or die, and that’s the single biggest driver of all this.”

@DubsLead: “Seems that this is officially the ‘last dance’ with Steph and Dray aging.”

@MarcGrandi: “Steve Kerr had far from a perfect season this past year — and he’d admit that — but I really don’t know what to say to you if you thought the Warriors, given where their roster is, could have replaced Kerr with a better coach for this group. Just straight foolishness.”

@dieter: “Imagine, just for a moment, thinking that you could hire a better coach than Steve Kerr.”

@DanielLurie: Welcome back, Coach. This city and this region owes you so much. We look forward to watching you continue to lead our Warriors.

What’s Next For Golden State?

Steve Kerr, Steph Curry and Draymond Green

The Warriors are coming off a 37-win season, plagued by injuries to Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody. Their offseason begins at the NBA draft lottery, with the Warriors having a 2.0% chance of landing the No. 1 pick and a 2.8% chance of grabbing a Top 4 selection.

With Steve Kerr secured for the next two seasons, Steph Curry’s extension could be next. They might want to align their contracts and ride off into the sunset at the same time.

Draymond Green is in the same position, though his future in Golden State is not as secured as Curry. Green has a player option for next season, but an extension that should align with Curry and Kerr’s contract is a possibility.

However, the Warriors are looking to add talent on their roster to give themselves a shot to compete. Green understands the business, so he knows that he could get be part of a package for a potential trade this summer.
