Knicks guard Josh Hart reacts during a playoff game as his status remains uncertain ahead of Game 6.

The New York Knicks may be facing a key availability question heading into a closeout opportunity.

Josh Hart is listed as questionable for Game 6 against the Atlanta Hawks due to a lower back contusion, putting his status in doubt for Thursday’s pivotal contest.

Hart exited late in Game 5 after a hard fall and did not return, heading to the locker room with visible discomfort. The Knicks did not provide an immediate postgame update, and his condition now looms as a major storyline with the series on the line.

Josh Hart’s Impact Looms Large for Knicks

Hart has been one of the Knicks’ most reliable all-around contributors in the series, averaging 10.0 rebounds, 9.4 points, 4.8 assists and 1.6 steals.

His versatility — particularly on the glass and defensively — has helped New York control key stretches, making his potential absence a significant concern despite optimism he could still suit up.

Given the stakes, it would be surprising if Hart doesn’t attempt to play, but even a limited version could alter the Knicks’ rotation and rhythm.

New York’s Key Factor

If Hart is unable to go, the Knicks may need to lean even more on their surging bench unit.

Jordan Clarkson and Jose Alvarado have provided a major boost in recent games, helping sustain energy and extend leads when the starters rest.

Clarkson has averaged 7.8 points through five games, while also making an impact on the glass — rebounding 12.2% of New York’s missed shots during the playoffs, per Knicks Film School’s Ritz Holtzman.

Jordan Clarkson is rebounding a hilarious 12.2% of NYK misses in playoffs.

This follows a season in which he sported the highest OREB% of his long career, and the Knicks overall OREB% was 3.2% higher with him on floor.

Even when HE doesn’t secure it, watch the work/physicality.

Alvarado, meanwhile, has emerged as one of the biggest surprises of the series after initially falling out of the rotation.

“It’s just part of the business: stay ready,” Alvarado said. “Whatever the team needs.”

Jose Alvarado Seizes Opportunity in Rotation

After not playing in Game 1, Alvarado has carved out a steady role under coach Mike Brown.

He delivered 12 points in limited minutes in Game 5, including a key stretch early in the second quarter that helped the Knicks build momentum.

“My teammates found me,” Alvarado said. “I was open and then I made the shots.”

His improved shooting — including a 2-for-3 performance from three-point range — has addressed a previous weakness and solidified his place in the rotation.

Bench Depth Could Be Deciding Factor in Game 6

New York’s bench has played a major role in the team’s recent success.

The combination of Miles McBride, Mitchell Robinson, Clarkson and Alvarado outscored Atlanta’s bench by a wide margin in Game 5, finishing as a +56 in their minutes.

“We’re all tough-minded. We love challenges,” Clarkson said. “This team has been resilient all year.”

That depth could prove critical again in Game 6, especially if Hart is limited or unavailable.

Game 6 Stakes: Closeout Opportunity for Knicks

The Knicks enter Game 6 with a chance to eliminate the Hawks and advance, but Hart’s status adds uncertainty to an otherwise strong position.

While New York has built momentum behind its defense and bench production, Hart’s presence remains central to the team’s identity.

If he plays, the Knicks regain one of their most versatile pieces.

If not, their depth — and resilience — will be tested in their biggest game of the series.
