Rob Thomson was let go by the Phillies, but his old team, the Yankees, were mentioned in an assessment of his future.

The Philadelphia Phillies got off to a dreadful start this season. After winning 96 games last year and winning the National League East for the second year in a row, the Phillies are tied with the New York Mets for the worst record in Major League Baseball at 9-19.

Like the Mets, the Phillies had a long losing streak and are now 10 1/2 games out of first place in the division. Things got so bad that they finally fired manager Rob Thomson. Don Mattingly was named the interim manager in his place. Thomson had been the manager of the Phillies since 2022 when he was promoted in place of Joe Girardi.

Where Thomson ends up next is unclear at the moment. He could take up another managerial gig at some point or could take a coaching role with another team. Adam Wells of Bleacher Report listed three potential landing spots for Thomson, and one option was him potentially returning to the New York Yankees as a coach.

“The overwhelming majority of Thomson’s MLB career was spent with the Yankees. He coached in the organization for 28 seasons from 1990 to 2017, including the last 14 at the big-league level,” Wells wrote.

“Thomson held a myriad of roles with New York during his time with the organization. He started as a base coach in the minor leagues, then moved into the front office as director of player development (2000 to ’02) and vice president of minor league development (2003).”

Thomson joined the Yankees’ coaching staff in 2008 when Girardi was hired to replace Joe Torre. 10 years later, he joined the Phillies, but he was the team’s bench coach in ’08 and served as their third-base coach in 2009 when they won the World Series.

So, there could be a fit on the coaching staff at some point for Thomson. Obviously, he isn’t going to be a candidate to manage given that Aaron Boone is in charge. Unless something changes, Boone likely isn’t going anywhere.

Still, Thomson has a lot of history with the Yankees, and he could potentially find himself back in uniform with them at some point or at least in a different role with the organization.

He brings a lot of baseball experience to a potential new role and is somebody worth considering if the Yankees have to make any coaching changes at the end of the season. There is a lot of merit to a possible role for him.

What Thomson’s Future May Hold

It is worth noting that before Thomson took over for Girardi in Philadelphia, he was strongly considering retirement at the end of the season. That changed when Girardi was fired, but clearly it was on the table.

Perhaps instead of returning to the Yankees, Thomson will reconsider retirement. He has been in baseball for a long time, so it would not be a stretch to assume that it could be on the table once more.

It will be interesting to see what ultimately happens with the now former Phillies manager and if he will continue.
