Yankees manager sends message to Spencer Jones.

The New York Yankees are off to the best start in the American League. New York just swept the Boston Red Sox in a three-game set, has won six in a row, and is set to take on the Houston Astros in a weekend series, which should be exciting.

Given the recent success, that gives the Yankees some added luxury with roster moves and player updates. One thing that’s on every Yankees fan’s mind is when will top prospect Spencer Jones get his shot in MLB?

Spencer Jones Gets Strong Take By MLB Writer

Spencer Jones is a 24-year-old left-handed hitting outfielder with strong power.

He was drafted by the Yankees in the first round of the 2022 MLB draft. He’s 6-foot-7 and has risen the ranks of New York’s pipeline over the past several years.

MLB.com writer Jason Catania believes that the Yankees should go ahead and call up Spencer Jones, because what’s the worst that can happen?

“Let’s see what Jones can do in The Show. The likelihood is that, at the very least, his elite power will play at the big league level, so give him a chance to get his feet wet. Think: A platoon/backup/pinch-hitter role where the lefty-swinging Jones could start showing what he’s capable of, even if it’s only a few games a week. Plus, that would allow the Yankees to deploy him strategically, in favorable matchups against right-handed starters or relievers.”

The counter is that the Yankees’ front office doesn’t want to play that cat-and-mouse game with Spencer Jones and constantly be re-assigning him every other day, which is what they could also do.

This season in Triple-A, he’s off to a bit of a slow start, hitting .231 with five home runs, 24 RBI, and 35 strikeouts. Strikeouts might be the sole reason Spencer Jones has not been called up yet. Across AA and AAA last season, Jones hit 35 home runs.

Should the Yankees Trade Spencer Jones?

The big Achilles of his minor league career has been the strikeouts. Across five seasons of minor league player, Spencer Jones has 589 strikeouts in 1571 total at-bats. Those are striking numbers, especially for the minors, where it’s supposed to be easier to keep the ball in play.

And then there’s the counterargument that the Yankees could also trade Spencer Jones. It sounds like a solid idea on paper, but the last thing New York would want is to trade Jones for, let’s say, a rental player, or a player who may not be on the Yankees for long, and then Spencer Jones turns into an all-star player with another organization.

Reports indicate that the Yankees want to hold onto him, at least until he makes his MLB debut, but that’s the big question around Jones: when will he debut?
