ESPN Updates Luka Doncic Return Timeline With Earlier Target Date

Luka Doncic reacts during NBA game as ESPN updates return timeline with earlier target date

Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic during game action. ESPN updated his injury return timeline, pointing to an earlier target date for his comeback.

ESPN updated Luka Doncic’s return timeline Monday, listing an earlier target date that could accelerate his comeback from injury, if the estimate very quietly posted by the network proves correct.

The ESPN preview page for Tuesday’s Game 1 matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Oklahoma City Thunder now lists May 7 as Doncic’s estimated return date, considerably earlier than the May 11 projection most analysts had identified as the realistic floor for a comeback. The revised timeline signals a potentially shorter absence than initially feared, raising the possibility of a quicker return to game action.

Doncic Estimated Return Date Surfaces on ESPN Injury Report

The update appeared without announcement on ESPN’s Game 1 preview page, with no accompanying story or push alert. May 7 corresponds to Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals, scheduled for 8:30 p.m. CT Thursday at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City.

Doncic went down April 2 in Oklahoma City, suffering a Grade 2 left hamstring strain. He sat out the Lakers’ entire first-round series against the Houston Rockets. Los Angeles closed out that matchup in six games without their franchise centerpiece.

The standard recovery window for a Grade 2 hamstring strain runs four to six weeks, placing Doncic at the front end of that range as the second round tips off Tuesday.

Senior NBA insider Shams Charania delivered a notably cautious assessment Sunday on Inside the NBA.

“The Lakers are evaluating Doncic on a week-to-week basis with that Grade 2 hamstring strain,” the ESPN NBA insider said. “One source told me in the last few days, ‘It’s still a slow path on Doncic’s recovery.’ He’s doing more and more on the court, but still not full-fledged running or full-contact workouts.”

Charania’s framing — ESPN week-to-week, no full-contact activity — sits in tension with the May 7 date now appearing on ESPN’s own platform.

That disconnect — ESPN’s platform listing a May 7 return while insiders continue to describe a slower recovery — creates real uncertainty around Doncic’s true timeline heading into Game 2.

Lakers Face Thunder Without Doncic

The stakes could not be higher for Los Angeles heading into this series shorthanded. The Thunder finished the regular season 64-18, the best record in the NBA, and swept the Phoenix Suns in the first round. The Lakers enter as a heavy underdog. DraftKings opened them at +750 on the series moneyline.

Oklahoma City forward Jalen Williams is also dealing with a hamstring issue, listed as game-time doubtful for Game 1 with a Grade 1 left hamstring strain. His estimated return is May 5 — the night of Game 1 — leaving his availability uncertain at tip-off, per the Lakers-Thunder injury breakdown.

LeBron James, Austin Reaves, Deandre Ayton, and Luke Kennard figure to carry the offensive load while Doncic works his way back. Coach JJ Redick has given no public indication of when his star will be cleared for full practice, let alone game action.

Doncic averaged 33.5 points, 8.3 assists, and 8.0 rebounds per game this season, leading the Lakers in all three categories. For now, the Lakers’ outlook hinges on whether that earlier target date proves accurate — and whether Doncic can return in time to swing the series against Oklahoma City.
