Do the New York Yankees need an upgrade on the left side of their infield? With the best record in the American League, New York has firm World Series aspirations, which could mean they will be buyers come the summer months at the MLB trade deadline.

MLB Insider Jon Morosi indicated yesterday in a report that MLB trade talks are beginning early this season, and the Yankees are certainly a team to watch for. In a recent mock trade idea by SI.com’s Thomas Carelli, the Yankees are featured by trading for Houston Astros‘ third baseman Isaac Paredes.

Isaac Paredes could give New York a strong power boost in their lineup.

Should the Yankees Trade for Isaac Paredes?

Here are the full trade details, as proposed by Carelli:

“Yankees Get: 3B, Isaac Paredes

Astros Get: RHP (Double-A), Brock Selvidge, UTIL, Jorbit Vivas, RHP, Zach Messinger”

Carelli also wrote (on April 30):

“While the Yankees may enjoy the defense of [Ryan] McMahon, they can use the bat to surge a World Series run further. Paredes surely will not start every day at 3rd base, and that will definitely harm his fantasy baseball upside. Yet, if Paredes were to join the Yankees and then flash his elite pull-hitting ability, he could become an elite 3rd base stash in fantasy baseball. In this deal, he is definitely a buy-cheap option.”

In 231 at-bats since joining the Yankees at the MLB trade deadline last season, Ryan McMahon is hitting .185 with six home runs and an OPS+ of 69. Paredes would be a huge offensive upgrade at the hot corner, and is also on an expiring deal.

McMahon is still on a six-year, $70 million deal. His trade value is probably pretty low right now, but he’s a guy the Yankees may need to make a decision on soon.

So, should the Yankees trade for Paredes?

Isaac Paredes’ Fit with Yankees

Houston Astros third baseman Isaac Paredes during an MLB game

GettyAstros third baseman Isaac Paredes continues to emerge in Yankees trade rumors.

Look, Isaac Paredes is shaping up to be one of the top trade candidates this season. Whether it’s too early or not to start thinking about potential landing destinations, the Yankees have to be considered among the top of that list.

Paredes is off to a bit of a slow start this season, but he’s certainly due for positive regression, and already has much better numbers than McMahon.

He technically has a team option for 2027, but that gives the Astros more luxury with what they want to do with him. Landing a player-haul for three capable players seems about as good as you’ll get at this moment, although the Astros may want to add an MLB-ready pitcher if they’re going to give up a top asset like Isaac Paredes.

In 102 games with Houston in 2025, Paredes hit 20 home runs and walked 50 en route to an OPS of .809.
