The Detroit Red Wings‘ draft picks 2026 might not be as impressive as in other seasons. In particular, the Wings won’t have a first-round pick for the first time since 2012. That year, Detroit was one year removed from making it to the Western Conference Final.

Since then, the Red Wings slid into a gradual decline, eventually leading to the NHL’s longest playoff drought.

According to Tankathon, the Wings will have their first selection at #47. That’s not a bad slot, but not precisely the typical spot teams find superstars. Sure, there could always be a gem somewhere in the second round. But that generally boils down to luck.

History Not Really on Red Wings’ Side

Unfortunately, history really isn’t on the Red Wings’ side. The last time the club found an NHL regular in the second round was in 2019, when the Wings took Albert Johansson with the 60^th pick.

From 2020 on, none of Detroit’s second-rounders have made it to the NHL. That’s why the Red Wings’ draft picks 2026 will need to focus on finding overlooked value, now more than ever.

One of the biggest mistakes organizations make is to pretty much throw whatever they can find and hope it sticks somewhere. That’s why having an abundance of picks doesn’t always translate to more success.
