Jesse Love came within one corner of a major NASCAR win before disaster struck late at Watkins Glen International on Saturday. The Richard Childress Racing driver led late in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race but lost control in Turn 7 on the final lap. That mistake allowed Connor Zilisch to make the winning pass in the last corner.

After trailing late in the race, Zilisch capitalized on Love’s final-corner mistake and edged ahead by 0.262 seconds to earn his third consecutive Watkins Glen win. Love had controlled much of the afternoon with strong pace, careful fuel management, and one of his best road-course performances before the race slipped away in the closing moments.

After climbing from his car, the young NASCAR driver struggled to hide his emotions as he described the painful ending to one of the toughest races of his career.

Jesse Love Reacts After NASCAR Watkins Glen International Heartbreak

Jesse Love admitted the loss at NASCAR Watkins Glen hit him harder than expected after leading much of the race. He said he spent the last year and a half heavily focused on improving his road-course racing.

“Sorry. I put so much effort into the road course side of things over the last year and a half. Because of that, I care so much about it. The pieces were there this weekend, and I probably wasn’t missing the skill today. I was missing the mental strength to do my job in a situation like that.”

The NASCAR driver managed fuel carefully throughout the race and stayed near the front all afternoon. He also benefited after Connor Zilisch damaged his front splitter earlier in the event. That moment gave Jesse Love a clear chance to control the closing laps at Watkins Glen.

However, the race changed in the final corner when Love slid wide exiting Turn 7. Zilisch quickly took advantage and completed the pass before the finish line.

“It catches me off guard because that’s not who I am, and I’m better than that. I probably need to feel this pain for a while to become better because of it. I’ve been fortunate not to have many traumatizing experiences in my life, but this is the worst pain I’ve ever experienced. I think I’m embarrassed with myself and frustrated.”

NASCAR Watkins Glen Battle Shows Jesse Love’s Growth

Even with the painful result, NASCAR Watkins Glen showed how much Jesse Love has improved on road courses. The Richard Childress Racing driver stayed competitive against one of the series’ strongest road-course racers and handled the pressure throughout the event.

Love also spoke about the support system around him and the people who helped him improve in this style of racing.

“He’s been my pedestal on this style of racing since I met him. I’ve worked so hard, and so many people have worked hard for me to have days like this, where I come out on the other side of it. I let those people down today, and I don’t take that lightly.”

The finish extended Zilisch’s strong record at Watkins Glen while leaving Jesse Love with another tough lesson in NASCAR racing, where one mistake can erase hours of strong work.

Jesse Love Plans Strong Response After Loss

Despite the heartbreak at NASCAR Watkins Glen, Jesse Love said he plans to use the experience as motivation for the rest of the season.

“Absolutely. I’m very fortunate to have developed the growth mindset that I have. I’m going to come back next week a lot stronger because of it. But right now, it’s such an intense pain.”

The final-lap battle between Jesse Love and Connor Zilisch became one of the biggest moments of the NASCAR weekend at Watkins Glen and showed how quickly victory can disappear in road course racing.
