Orioles make pitching move aheaf of Yankees series.

The Baltimore Orioles have made a much-needed move to their pitching staff before their series against the New York Yankees.

Baltimore’s rotation has been plagued by injuries, and ahead of Friday’s game, the Orioles called up left-hander Cade Povich and optioned Cameron Foster to Triple-A. Povich will also start Friday’s game against the Yankees.

Povich arrived in New York on Thursday, and the expectation was that he would start on Friday, which is now confirmed.

The 26-year-old left-handed starter will be on five days’ rest after his most recent start in Triple-A Norfolk. Povich is 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA in 3 starts this season in Triple-A, while in the MLB, he’s appeared in 2 games and started 1 for the Orioles.

Povich is 1-0 with a 2.19 ERA this season, while in 2025, he appeared in 22 games, starting 20, going 3-8 with a 5.21 ERA in 112.1 innings. This will be his fifth start vs. the Yankees as he’s 0-2 with a 4.58 ERA. In his last start against New York in September of last year, he went 5 innings, allowing 3 runs and walked 4.

Povich will face right-hander Will Warren, who gets the start for the Yankees, who have won four straight series after splitting against the Los Angeles Angels from April 13-16.

Povich Replaces Trevor Rogers

The Orioles calling up Povich was a necessary move after the team placed ace left-hander Trevor Rogers on the IL.

Rogers became the 11th player currently on the O’s IL, and the 15th overall to spend time on the injured list this season. The team placed him on the IL due to a flu that is circulating around the Orioles’ clubhouse.

“It’s hitting him pretty hard,” manager Craig Albernaz said. “It’s just the unfortunate timing of it, because he’s starting and throwing up. All that good stuff. It’s tough for a dude to do that and then go pitch and start in a big league game. Obviously, he wanted to. But sometimes, you have to be the adult in the room and look out for a player.

“It’d be no benefit for Rog to try to push through it, because he doesn’t have his strength back yet. We want to make sure that he gets rehydrated, he gets his strength back. And whenever the stint is over, he’ll be ready to go.”

The Orioles rotation is currently without Dean Kremer, who’s on the IL with a right quad strain. Zach Eflin, meanwhile, is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery.

Povich Failed to Make Orioles Rotation

During spring training, Povich was competing for a spot in the rotation.

However, he ended up failing to make the roster and was sent down to Triple-A. As spring training was going on, Povich felt like the competition was good for everyone involved.

“I think it helps in all aspects,” Povich said at the time. “And I think it’s one thing if the competition is like, ‘I’m trying to beat this guy,’ and it’s not friendly. But I think this group of guys in this clubhouse, we’re competing, but we’re also all cheering for each other.”

With all the injuries, Povich has a chance to cement himself in the Orioles rotation.
