The Kansas City Chiefs may already be working on their next defensive addition.

The team has been overhauling the defense after last season’s disappointing outcome, when the unit struggled en route to the first season without a playoff berth in more than a decade. Reporter Charles Goldman of AtoZ Sports believes that veteran Cam Jordan could be a logical target — and thinks the team may already be recruiting him.

Chiefs Could Have Sights Set on Productive Edge Rusher

As Goldman noted, Jordan made an appearance at quarterback Patrick Mahomes‘ golf tournament, which could lay the groundwork for the Chiefs to land him.

“Patrick Mahomes was just hosting his 15 and Mahomies Golf Event for Charity, and guess who was there golfing? None other than the perfect guy for the job, Cam Jordan, the former New Orleans Saints defensive end, who is currently a free agent,” Goldman wrote. “He would be the perfect Steve Spagnuolo fit in this defense. And even better—Jordan wouldn’t complain about not playing the entire game, or not playing enough.”

Goldman added that Jordan would be a strong fit for the Chiefs, a productive edge rusher who can play on a rotational basis.

“Not only does he fit the physical prototype that they’ve preferred at 6-foot-4 and 287 pounds, but he’s also played for Steve Spagnuolo before,” Goldman added. “If the Chiefs feel they need to add depth, Jordan feels like a player who can elevate the room, even at 36. He’s coming off a 10.5 sack season in 2025, which is more than any single defender generated in Kansas City last year.”

The Chiefs are relatively thin in their pass-rushing group, Goldman added. While the team does have some strength at the top of the depth chart with George Karlaftis, Asthon Gillotte, and rookie R Mason Thomas leading the way, they are lacking depth beyond that.

Chiefs Could Have Other Options

The Chiefs have already overhauled some areas of their defense this season, namely the secondary. The team traded top corner Trent McDuffie and traded up in the first round of the draft to land his likely replacement, Mansoor Delane.

The team hasn’t invested quite as much in their pass-rushing group, but could have some other options for depth behind their starting group. The team picked up former Duke edge rusher Vincent Anthony Jr. as an undrafted free agent, and Arrowhead Pride’s Caleb James predicted he could group into a strong contributor on passing downs.

But Anthony would likely need to spend much of his rookie season getting up to speed before becoming a regular contributor, James added.

“Anthony still has plenty to work on with his game, despite showing some potential as a pass rusher,” James wrote. “Aside from speed and quickness, he has very little power or pocket-crushing ability, and his hand-fighting will need work. He is unable to counter well off blocks and often is stalemated if he can’t win quickly.

“The best case for Anthony in Kansas City will be making the practice squad as a rookie and doing his best to develop his game and learn the Chiefs’ defense.”
