Former GM Delivers Telling Take on Texans’ Kayden McDonald

Kaden McDonald could solve a long-standing issue for the Houston Texans.

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio set out to further the vision he and head coach DeMeco Ryans have for the roster and came away with a potential game-changer in Kayden McDonald.

McDonald was not the first pick of the Texans’ draft class. That honor went to Keylan Rutledge, who also fits the Texans’ vision.

However, McDonald has a clearer path to playing time as a unique presence on the roster.

Ran Carthon Gets Honest About Texans’ Kayden McDonald

Kayden McDonald, Houston Texans

GettyKayden McDonald of Ohio State arrives before the 2026 NFL Draft.

Former Tennessee Titans general manager Ran Carthon, now an analyst for CBS Sports, gave Caserio and the Texans a “B+” for McDonald and the rest of the class, but “flirted with an ‘A.’”

As for McDonald specifically, Carthon believes he resolves a long-standing issue.

“They’ve been light in the interior of their defensive line over these last couple years and have given up some leaky yardage in the run game,” Carthon said on “CBS Sports HQ” on April 26. “Now you have that plug-in guy in the middle that’s going to free up those linebackers at the second level and just let them run, chase, and hit, which is what they like to do.”

The Texans ranked fourth against the run last season with a group of free agents led by Sheldon Rankins, who re-signed in free agency this offseason. Still, none of the Texans’ other DTs are built like the 6-foot-2, 327-pounder lineman.

McDonald landing with the Texans is one of the “10 best scheme fits” from the 2026 draft, according to The Athletic’s Ted Nguyen.

Nguyen highlighted how McDonald will help EDGEs Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson Jr.

“Their defensive line is made up of single-gap penetrators, and McDonald specializes in two-gapping, but it’s a valuable skill in any system. His mean streak also fits perfectly into Houston’s culture,” Nguyen wrote on April 26. “The Texans’ style of defense leaves them susceptible to some gap runs, but McDonald is going to make it even harder for offenses to create an advantage with them.”

Texans Get Their Guys

Carthon noted how Caserio’s selection of Rutledge might not have been overly popular, but that Ryans, among others in the Texans organization, insisted they “got our guy.”

Carthon had plenty to say about the rest of the Texans’ class, too.

“A guy that I thought people slept on a little bit was Wade Woodaz from Clemson. You turn on the tape and you watch him, he is flying around making a ton of plays, tackling. And I think he’ll be a natural fit,” Carthon said.

Kamari Ramsey, I think, will come in on the back end and compete to be that third, fourth safety. Because I do think he’s a rock-and-roll guy. He has some nickel flex. I don’t know that he’s an ideal NFL nickel athlete, but he has some nickel flex to do some of his own stuff in nickel. So I gave them a ‘B+.’”

The Texans’ roster will be difficult to make this coming season, but that should eventually lead to a talent-laden practice squad.

Houston also still has some flexibility.

Nick Caserio Gets Draft Recap

Nick Caserio, Houston Texans

GettyHouston Texans general manager Nick Caserio is seen before a game between the Auburn Tigers and the Texas A&M Aggies.

Caserio has spoken candidly about his willingness to trade around in the draft to secure a player the Texans want, and that continued this offseason. Not only did Caserio swap capital and players before the draft, but he also made several moves during.

“Texans GM Nick Caserio completed three more draft trades this year,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter posted on X on April 26, “giving him 28 trades in the past six NFL drafts.”

The Texans are also in decent shape financially.

“Houston Texans’ salary cap number will settle in around $8.1m after the rookie (drafted & undrafted) class has signed their contracts. Currently at 89 active players,” Over The Cap’s Troy Chapman posted on X on April 26.

“Rookie pool number may come in a bit higher than originally projected, may cause a change in my numbers.”

That could just set the stage for more manipulation of the Texans’ roster by Caserio and Co.
