Former Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd provided a statement after the franchise decided to part ways with him.

The Dallas Mavericks parted ways with head coach Jason Kidd following the 2025-26 NBA season. It was a decision that the new president and alternate governor of the franchise, Masai Ujiri, led shortly after the team hired him.

“Tough day for us yesterday. Thank you for everybody coming out. Jason Kidd, Hall of Famer, incredible player. What he’s done for this organization, we truly respect,” the new front office member said following the decision in a Wednesday press conference. “This was a very, very tough decision.”

The franchise let go of Jason Kidd less than a year after he signed a multiyear contract extension.

Jason Kidd Provides Statement After Being Let Go by Mavericks

Two days after the Dallas Mavericks fired Jason Kidd, he provided a statement on social media.

“The last five years in Dallas have meant more to my family and me than I can fully put into words,” Kidd said. “I want to sincerely thank the Mavericks organization, the players, coaches, staff, front office, ownership, and every employee behind the scenes who put their heart into this team every single day. It has been an honor to work alongside so many incredible people.

To the players, thank you for your trust, your commitment, and the battles we went through together. I am proud of what we built, the relationships formed, and the way you competed night in and night out.”

To the fans, thank you for embracing me and supporting this team with so much passion. Your energy, loyalty, and love for the Mavericks make Dallas one of the truly special places in sports.

And to the city of Dallas, thank you for welcoming my family and me with open arms. The friendships and memories created here will stay with us forever. While this chapter comes to an end, I leave with nothing but gratitude and respect for everyone who was part of this journey.”

A Summary of Jason Kidd’s Coaching Tenure With the Mavericks

In his five years as the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, Jason Kidd led the franchise to a 205-205 regular-season record and a 22-18 postseason record. Dallas advanced to the 2022 Western Conference Finals and the 2024 NBA Finals under the coach’s helm.

Before parting ways with Kidd, the head coach expressed interest in being promoted to the Mavericks’ president of basketball operations position after Nico Harrison was fired at the beginning of the 2025-26 season.

Kidd was kept out of the loop in the hiring process of the new president, Masai Ujiri, wrote ESPN’s Tim MacMahon. This sequence of events led to both the Mavericks and Kidd to mutually part ways.

Similar to the days leading up to Dallas trading franchise superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, Jason Kidd’s opinion was not taken into account in the front office changes.

It appears that these actions took a toll on the relationship between Kidd and the Mavericks organization, leading to the two sides parting ways.

Jason Kidd’s Coaching Career

It’s uncertain where Jason Kidd will land following his departure from the Dallas Mavericks. Following his retirement as a player in 2013, the 2018 Hall of Fame inductee began his coaching career with the Brooklyn Nets.

After one season with the Nets, the franchise traded his coaching rights to the Milwaukee Bucks for two second-round draft picks. He would be the lead man in Milwaukee for three and a half years before being let go in the middle of the 2017-18 season.

Kidd achieved his first NBA championship as a coach, serving as an assistant under Frank Vogel with the Los Angeles Lakers from 2019 to 2021.

After his two seasons in Los Angeles, the Mavericks hired him as head coach. After five seasons in Dallas, Kidd will now wait to see where his next pitstop will be.
