Los Angeles Lakers staring lineup

The Los Angeles Lakers are one win away from advancing to the Western Conference semifinals, but their approach for Game 5 against the Houston Rockets reflects both urgency and continuity. With a 3-1 series lead and a chance to close out at home, the Lakers have confirmed their starting lineup while also receiving a key injury update involving Austin Reaves.

Los Angeles is coming off a 115-96 loss in Game 4, where turnovers and offensive struggles disrupted their rhythm. Despite that setback, the Lakers remain in control of the series and will look to respond with a more composed performance on their home floor.

The lineup decision comes at a critical moment, especially with Luka Doncic still sidelined due to a hamstring strain and Reaves returning from injury. The Lakers will rely on a mix of veteran leadership and role-player production to secure the series.

Los Angeles Lakers Announce Starting Lineup Against Houston Rockets

Lineup alert: Lakers will start LeBron, Kennard, Smart, Hachimura, Ayton on Wednesday.

For Game 5, the Lakers will start Deandre Ayton at center, Rui Hachimura and LeBron James at forward, and Luke Kennard alongside Marcus Smart in the backcourt.

The group has been central to Los Angeles building its 3-1 lead, particularly with Doncic and Reaves unavailable for most of the series. Kennard and Smart have taken on expanded roles, providing perimeter shooting and defensive intensity, while Hachimura has contributed scoring support.

James remains the focal point. The 41-year-old averaged 25.3 points, 9.7 rebounds and 8.7 assists over the first three games, helping the Lakers take control early in the series. However, he is coming off a difficult Game 4, finishing with 10 points on 2-of-9 shooting and committing eight turnovers.

The Lakers will need a more efficient performance from James in Game 5. Historically, he has delivered in closeout situations. His teams hold a 41-14 record in such games, and he has not lost consecutive closeout opportunities since 2006.

Ayton’s presence inside remains significant as well. Before his ejection in Game 4, he recorded 19 points and 10 rebounds, providing a consistent scoring option in the interior. His matchup with Houston’s Alperen Sengun will again be a key factor.

Austin Reaves Return Adds Depth to the Lakers Rotation

While the starting lineup remains unchanged, the Lakers received a boost with the return of Austin Reaves, who has been cleared after missing four weeks with an oblique strain.

Reaves was listed as questionable entering Game 5 but was ruled in following his pregame workout. His return addresses one of the Lakers’ biggest issues from Game 4: ballhandling and offensive organization.

Los Angeles committed 24 turnovers in the loss, allowing Houston to generate transition opportunities and control momentum. Reaves, who averaged 23.3 points, 5.5 assists, and 4.7 rebounds this season, provides an additional playmaker alongside James.

His availability gives the Lakers more flexibility, even if he does not return to the starting lineup immediately. It also reduces the burden on Kennard and Smart, who have been asked to take on greater offensive responsibilities.

Houston, meanwhile, enters Game 5 without Kevin Durant, who remains out with an ankle injury. The Rockets showed resilience in Game 4, with Amen Thompson scoring 23 points and Sengun adding 19, while the starting unit combined for the majority of the team’s offense.

Despite the Game 4 result, the Lakers remain in a strong position. No team in NBA history has come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a series, and Los Angeles still holds two chances to close it out.

Game 5 now presents an opportunity for the Lakers to respond, clean up their mistakes, and advance. With their starting lineup intact and Reaves back in the rotation, the focus will be on execution, particularly limiting turnovers and regaining offensive efficiency.

If they succeed, Los Angeles will secure its first playoff series win since 2023 and move on to face the Oklahoma City Thunder in the next round.
