On May 1, The Devil Wears Prada 2 was released in theaters in the United States. New York Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns was one of several celebrities to make a cameo in the film that stars Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.

It wasn’t Towns’ first foray into acting since he has made several appearances as himself in movies like What Men Want in 2019 starring Taraji P. Henson and National Champions in 2021 starring J.K. Simmons.

KAT also had roles in a couple of TV series, The 5th Quarter in 2016 and Velma in 2023.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday after practice, Towns was asked about his cameo on The Devil Wears Prada 2. He played himself and appeared in a scene with Hathaway at a party hosted by Streep’s character, Miranda Priestly.

“It was an honor,” Towns said, via The New York Post. “It was an honor and it was awesome to just see the masses of work at work in the acting world, and to be able to see them just do what they do at the highest level, it was such an honor.”

In the scene, Towns introduced himself as Karl to Hathaway’s Andy Sachs, who asked him about the Knicks’ game. Hathaway is a huge Knicks fan in real life, though she’s more of an OG Anunoby supporter.

In an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last Wednesday, Hathaway revealed that she almost wore an Anunoby jersey before changing her mind.

“I’m very chill, I’m very loving and calm, but like I’m also the type of fan that considered wearing an OG jersey out here today,” Hathaway said, via The Indianapolis Star. “I’m trying to be like a gentle, loving, motherly figure fan.”

Hathaway had a viral moment with Anunoby in a game against the Chicago Bulls back in November 2024. Anunoby nearly crashed into her during a play, spilling her and her son Jack’s popcorn.

In an interview with Liam Crowley of ScreenRant, The Devil Wears Prada 2 director David Frankle explained why celebrities like Karl-Anthony Towns were in the movie.

“He turned out to be a big fan,” Frankel said. “We reached out to him, and he was thrilled. For the athletes, we have KAT, and we have Rory McIlroy, which was thrilling for me as a golfer.”

Frankel also explained why Towns was in Miranda Priestly’s inner circle.

“I think Miranda’s world on weekends is filled with cool, interesting people,” Frankel said. “Anybody who’s the best at what they do, she wants to have for lunch. That’s how we sought out KAT.”

Towns was invited to appear at the premiere on April 20, but he was busy. It was the same day as Game 3 of their first-round series against the Atlanta Hawks.

The Knicks are now set to face the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
