The San Francisco Giants are 10-13 and could be sellers at the trade deadline if they are out of the playoff picture. Even after Tuesday’s 3-1 win against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Giants currently sit 4th in the NL West. 

Bleacher Report listed 10 players who are the most likely trade candidates ahead of the 2026 deadline. Giants second baseman Luis Arraez was one of the names listed as potentially being traded.

What Can Luis Arraez Bring to Teams?

Arraez is a three-time batting champion and is known for his elite bat-to-ball skills. He won three consecutive batting titles from 2022 to 2024 and has a career batting average of .317. Arraez is not slowing down and is currently slashing .305/ .337/ .366 with 6 RBIs and 2 stolen bases for the Giants.

The second baseman is also surprising many with his glove this season. Arraez did not have the reputation of being a good defender at the position. In his last two seasons with the Marlins and Padres, both teams converted him to first base.

Arraez signed with the Giants partially because they would play him back at second base. And so far, the 8-year MLB veteran is among the league leaders in outs above average at the position, according to @TJStats on “X.” 

Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report lists multiple teams that are getting a lack of production from the second base position. 

“The Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, Royals, Guardians and Reds have all gotten a .186 or worse batting average from the second base slot in their lineup thus far this season,” Miller writes. “They would all be salivating over the possibility of adding Arraez if that continues to be the case.”

It would also make sense for the Giants to part ways with Arraez if the team is out of the playoff hunt. The second baseman is only on a 1-year contract and will be a free agent after this season.

Bleacher Report also listed starting pitchers Robbie Ray and Tyler Mahle as possible trade candidates. Both players are impending free agents this offseason.

Giants President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey has shown that he won’t hesitate to offload players at the deadline, either. Posey traded away relief pitchers Camilo Doval to the Yankees, Tyler Rogers to the Mets and outfielder Mike Yasztremski to the Royals last season.

Who Could Step Into Second Base for the San Francisco Giants?

Utility infielder Casey Schmitt is having a breakout season offensively for the Giants. He is currently slashing .299/ .342/ .493 with 2 home runs and 8 RBIs. He has started mostly as the designated hitter for the Giants to get his bat in the lineup.

The 27-year-old has played all around the infield for the Giants. But he played 91 games throughout his 4-year career at second base.

What’s Next for the San Francisco Giants

The Giants host the Dodgers for two more games to conclude the three-game series. They then face the Miami Marlins for a three-game home series before going on a six-game road trip versus the Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays.

It is still early in the season, but the Giants are 6 games back of the division leaders, the Dodgers and Padres. They are also 3.5 games out of the wild-card spot.
